This paper proposes a new approach on the novel current control strategy for grid-tied voltage-source inverters (VSIs) with circumstances of asymmetrical voltage conditions. A standard grid-connected inverter (GCI) allows the degree of freedom to integrate the renewable energy system to enhance the penetration of total utility power. However, restrictive grid codes require that renewable sources connected to the grid must support stability of the grid under grid faults. Conventional synchronously rotating frame dq current controllers are insufficient under grid faults due to the low bandwidth of proportional-integral (PI) controllers. Hence, this work proposes a proportional current controller with a first-order low-pass filter disturbance observer (DOb). The proposed controller establishes independent control on positive, as well as negative, sequence current components under asymmetrical grid voltage conditions. The approach is independent of parametric component values, as it estimates nonlinear feed-forward terms with the low-pass filter DOb. A numerical simulation model of the overall power system was implemented in a MATLAB/Simulink (2014B, MathWorks, Natick, MA, USA). Further, particular results show that double-frequency active power oscillations are suppressed by injecting appropriate negative-sequence currents. Moreover, a set of simulation results provided in the article matches the developed theoretical background for its feasibility.
This paper presents a modified and novel form of the conventional short-term hydrothermal scheduling problem by incorporating the effects of adding the photovoltaic energy source to the conventional grid. A photovoltaic energy source is intermittent in nature, therefore, to determine the optimal power contribution of the photovoltaic source towards the economic dispatch problem, a detailed strategy is presented in this paper. The proposed design method includes the forecasting of the photovoltaic system's parameters using the Auto-Regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model. The analytical model is developed based on the fractional integral polynomials for studying the characteristics of the single photovoltaic module. The optimization of power allocation in the system consisting of conventional and non-conventional energy sources is highly non-linear and classical deterministic methods can not be guaranteed to determine the optimal solution for economic power dispatch. The global optima of such non-linear and non-convex problems can be determined using swarm-based intelligence techniques. This paper presents accelerated particle swarm optimization and the firefly algorithm to determine a solution for short-term non-linear scheduling problems. The multiple test cases have been presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed solution over classical methods. The overall generation cost of the selected hybrid system is reduced using the proposed methods while meeting the generation constraints of each energy source. Moreover, due to the stochastic nature of the meta-heuristic techniques, a comprehensive statistical comparison, based on the independent T-test results, is also presented to highlight the algorithm which performs better for selected scheduling problems. It has been demonstrated that accelerated particle swarm optimization gives lower mean generation cost of the system whereas the execution time of the firefly algorithm is better compared to its counterpart. The Accelerated Particle Swarm Optimization (APSO) algorithm is an efficient and the easiest to implement variant of the famous Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. PSO and its variant APSO have been implemented on the famous Short-Term Hydrothermal Scheduling (STHTS) problem in recent research, and they have shown promising results. The APSO algorithm can be further modified to enhance its optimizing capability by deploying dynamic search space squeezing. This paper presents the implementation of the improved APSO algorithm that is based on dynamic search space squeezing, on the short-term hydrothermal scheduling problem. To give a quantitative comparison, a true statistical comparison based on comparing means is also presented to draw conclusions.
In the modern world of technology, the cascaded DC-DC converters with multiple output configurations are contributing a dominant part in the DC distribution systems and DC micro-grids. An individual DC-DC converter of any configuration exhibits complex non-linear dynamic behavior resulting in instability. This paper presents a cascaded system with one source boost converter and three load converters including buck, Cuk, and Single-Ended Primary Inductance Converter (SEPIC) that are analyzed for the complex non-linear bifurcation phenomena. An outer voltage feedback loop along with an inner current feedback loop control strategy is used for all the sub-converters in the cascaded system. To explain the complex non-linear dynamic behavior, a discrete mapping model is developed for the proposed cascaded system and the Jacobian matrix's eigenvalues are evaluated. For the simplification of the analysis, every load converter is regarded as a fixed power load (FPL) under reasonable assumptions such as fixed frequency and input voltage. The eigenvalues of period-1 and period-2 reveal that the source boost converter undergoes period-2 orbit and chaos whereas all the load converters operate in a stable period-1 orbit. The proposed configuration eliminates the period-2 and chaotic behavior from all the load converters and is also validated using simulation in MATLAB/Simulink and experimental results.
Purpose
This paper aims to propose a robust cascaded controller based on proportional-integral (PI) and continuous sliding mode control.
Design/methodology/approach
Cascaded control structure is an attractive control scheme for DC-DC power converters. It has a two-loop structure where the outer loop contains PI controller and the inner loop uses sliding mode control (SMC). This structure thus combines the merits of both the control schemes. However, there are some issues that have prohibited its adoption in industry, the discontinuous nature of SMC which leads to variable switching frequency operation and is hard to realize practically. This paper attempts to overcome this issue by changing the discontinuous functionality of SMC to continuous by utilizing the concept of equivalent control.
Findings
The robustness of the controller designed is verified by considering various cases, namely, ideal case with no uncertainties, sudden variation of input supply voltage, load resistance, reference voltage, circuit-parameters and for noise disturbance. The controller effectiveness is validated by simulating the DC-DC boost and Cuk converters in SimPowerSystems toolbox of MATLAB/Simulink. It is shown that the performance of the proposed controller is satisfactory, and both reference output voltage and inductor current are tracked with little or no sensitivity to disturbances.
Originality/value
The results for various scenarios are interesting and show that the controller works quite satisfactorily for all the simulated uncertainties.
