These findings indicate clinically relevant differences exist in the sexual side effect profiles of these selected antipsychotics. These factors should be considered when selecting the most appropriate treatment for outpatients with schizophrenia.
Changes in physical, chemical and microbial parameters were investigated during the composting of municipal sewage sludge. Raw sewage sludge (30% dry matter) was mixed with compost from sewage sludge (85% dry matter) in 3:1 ratio (v/v). The mixture was divided into 4 windrows which were composted under the same conditions except the turning factor. The turning was every 7, 10, 15 days and according to the temperature which must be (55-65°C) for windrow 1 (W1), windrow 2 (W2), windrow 3 (W3) and windrow 4 (W4), respectively. Water was added to adjust the moisture content (40-60%). The composting process consisted of 2 periods; fermentation (12 weeks) and maturation (4 weeks). The results showed that the temperature reached the maximum after 12 weeks for W1 and 11 weeks for W2, W3 and W4 and then decreased. The final compost was nearly odourless and black, especially in case of W4. The general trend indicates a decrease in organic matter, organic carbon and nitrogen (N), whereas ash, potassium (K) and phosphorus (P) increased and consequently C/K and C/P ratios decreased. There was a slight increase in C/N ratio. The pH increased and then decreased to near neutrality at the end. The mesophilic bacteria increased during the fermentation period and decreased after that, whereas the thermophilic ones increased with increasing of temperature, decreased after 2 weeks and increased again during the fermentation period and then decreased. The mesophilic and thermophilic fungi were present during the first week and disappeared after that. The final compost was pathogens-free as indicated by the counts of coliforms and Salmonella.
Background
Diabetic foot ulceration is a serious chronic complication of diabetes mellitus characterized by high disability, mortality, and morbidity. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) has been widely used for diabetic wound healing due to its high content of growth factors. However, its application is limited due to the rapid degradation of growth factors. The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of combined adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADSCs) and PRP therapy in promoting diabetic wound healing in relation to the Notch signaling pathway.
Methods
Albino rats were allocated into 6 groups [control (unwounded), sham (wounded but non-diabetic), diabetic, PRP-treated, ADSC-treated, and PRP+ADSCs-treated groups]. The effect of individual and combined therapy was evaluated by assessing wound closure rate, epidermal thickness, dermal collagen, and angiogenesis. Moreover, gene and protein expression of key elements of the Notch signaling pathway (Notch1, Delta-like canonical Notch ligand 4 (DLL4), Hairy Enhancer of Split-1 (Hes1), Hey1, Jagged-1), gene expression of angiogenic marker (vascular endothelial growth factor and stromal cell-derived factor 1) and epidermal stem cells (EPSCs) related gene (ß1 Integrin) were assessed.
Results
Our data showed better wound healing of PRP+ADSCs compared to their individual use after 7 and 14 days as the combined therapy caused reepithelialization and granulation tissue formation with a marked increase in area percentage of collagen, epidermal thickness, and angiogenesis. Moreover, Notch signaling was significantly downregulated, and EPSC proliferation and recruitment were enhanced compared to other treated groups and diabetic groups.
Conclusions
These data demonstrated that PRP and ADSCs combined therapy significantly accelerated healing of diabetic wounds induced experimentally in rats via modulating the Notch pathway, promoting angiogenesis and EPSC proliferation.
BackgroundAdolescents rarely seek psychiatric help; they even hesitate to disclose their feelings to their parents. However; the adolescents especially the females experience depressive symptoms more frequently than general population. Do they experience classic depressive symptoms? Are there symptoms specific to this subpopulation?Aim of the studyThrough this study, the authors aimed to estimate the prevalence of depressive disorders in Egyptian adolescent female students. They also expected a characteristic profile of symptoms for the adolescent females. However available literature provides no guidance in the description of this profile of symptoms.MethodsA number of 602 adolescent females were interviewed, and subjected to General Health Questionnaire (GHQ); Children Depression Inventory (CDI), Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis-I Disorders (SCID-I), then Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (Ham-D). Results were analyzed by the use of SPSS-15.ResultsThe study revealed the prevalence of depression in the sample of the study to be 15.3% (measured by CDI), and 13.3% (measured by SCID-I). Fatigue was the most common presenting depressive symptom (81.3%), in addition to other emotional, cognitive and physiological symptoms. Suicidal ideations were the most common suicidal symptoms in depressed adolescent females (20%), with 2.5% serious suicidal attempts.ConclusionsThe somatic symptoms were by far the most common presenting symptom for female adolescents suffering from depressive disorders. Depressive phenomena including unexplained fatigue, decreased energy, psychomotor changes, lack of concentration, weight changes and suicidal ideations may be the presenting complaints instead of the classic sad mood.
