Implementation of flexible manufacturing technology has created major problems for designers and engineers who are responsi ble for specification and design of flexible manufacturing systems (FMS). The FMS design task appears to be an excellent applica tion for expert system techniques. The objective of this research was to develop an expert system which could analyze the out put from an FMS simulation model, determine whether opera tional and financial objectives were met, identify design defi ciencies, and propose designs which would overcome identified deficiencies. An overview of the system is given and a case study is presented to illustrate how the FMS design expert system operates.
Simulation methods are effectively used to investigate design issues of a proposed flexible manufacturing system (FMS). Unfortunately, process design engineers rarely have the necessary expertise to take full advantage of simulation methodology. Process Planning Simulation (PPS) is a software package which allows engineers with virtually no simulation expertise to define FMS designs and generate the simulation code necessary to model designs of interest. PPS uses SIMAN to model process elements of an FMS, and IFPS to model the financial aspects of the system.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
