The aim of this paper is to develop a new methodology of analysis and evaluation of Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) design configurations. It examines the use of an integrated, systemic, global and user oriented approach for the complex problem of selecting among several configuration alternatives the most suitable for a specific case. The methodology is implemented using the Decision Support System framework, offering an objective tool to help managers and engineers during the design stage of the development cycle of these manufacturing systems. A case study illustrates the effectiveness of the developed methodology.

ResumoEste trabalho apresenta um sistema inteligente desenvolvido para verificar se uma determinada opção de projeto de um Sistema Avançado de Manufatura (SAM) respeita os objetivos de projeto fixados pelo time de projetistas. Se um problema é encontrado, o sistema começa um ciclo de análisediagnóstico-recomendação no sentido de diagnosticar a causa do problema, bem como, sugerir possíveis ações no sentido de melhorar a alternativa de projeto em relação ao objetivo não respeitado. Para que este ciclo seja realizado com sucesso, o sistema desenvolvido combina simulação e sistemas baseados em conhecimento, utilizando a experiência e o conhecimento adquiridos por especialistas durante prévios projetos de SAM. Um exemplo ilustra a eficácia do sistema computacional. Palavras-chave: inteligência artificial, modelagem, projeto de sistemas, sistemas avançados de manufatura, simulação. AbstractThis article describes a tandem knowledge-based system developed to verify whether a specific advanced manufacturing system (AMS) scenario meets the design requirements defined by the design team. If a problem is found, the system starts an analysis-diagnosis-recommendation cycle in order to identify the possible cause(s) of the design deficiency as well as to propose changes to improve the performance of the AMS scenario. For this cycle to be successful, the developed system combines simulation and knowledge-based systems, using the experience and knowledge acquired by specialists during previous AMS projects. A case study illustrates the effectiveness of the system.

The development of design systems which ensure economic feasibility has been the focus of recent research in the manufacturing area. Traditional design and justification approaches have been cited as having shortcomings; thus, there have been a variety of modifications and enhancements developed. An approach that is conceptually different from the traditional approaches seeks the integration of the economic analysis within the design process. We denote this approach as the design justification method. This paper reviews literature related to the explicit and implicit integration of economic factors in the manufacturing system design process, followed by Supporting issues for the implementation of the design justification concept.
