Summary Chromosomal analysis of 4 Egyptian species of family Buthidae (Androctonus australis, Androctonus bicolor, Androctonus amoreuxi and Androctonus crassicauda) have been studied. The 4 buthid scorpions species have the same diploid chromosome number of 2nϭ24. These species have a unique combination of cytogenetic features including holocentric chromosomes. Multivalent chromosomes of regular and irregular form were observed during the first meiotic division. To the best of the authors knowledge, these results are reported for the first time in Egypt.

Summary The chromosome complements of eight species of Egyptian birds are investigated. The diploid chromosome numbers of these species, Hirundo daurica, Turdus migratorius, Corvus splendens, Bubulcus ibis, Ardeola grayii, Meleagris gallopavo, Upupa epops and Columba oenas, 74, 58, 78, 60, 60, 58, 110 and 76 are respectively. The sex chromosome constitutions are of homogametic ZZ in males and of heterogametic ZW in females. Karyotypic and morphometric data for the chromosome complements of these species have also been studied.

The chromosomes of ten species of birds and their karyological relationships have been studied. Besides, this is an attempt to contribute to the knowledge of evolution of karyotype of birds of Egypt, so far ignored in this aspect. To the best of author knowledge these results are reported for the first time in Egypt. Materials and methodsSpecimens of Himantopus himantopus, Hoplopterus spinosus, Larus genei, Gelochelidon nilotica, Numida meleagris, Lophura edwardsii, Tachybaptus ruficollis, Phalacrocorax carbo, Plegadis falcinellus and Anas querquedula were collected from different localities around Mediterranean Sea; Zoo Animals and Lake Manzala. Identification and classification of the specimens was carried out by the help of the description and keys provided by Gianfranco (1984) and Steven et al. (1989). Chromosomal preparations have been made from colchicinized bone marrow cells with usual air-drying techniqe according to Adegoke and Nadesan (1986) with some modifications made by Adegoke and Ejere (1991) and Salama et al. (1995). More than seventy spreads were counted to determine the diploid chromosome number and at least 15 well mitotic metaphases were karyotyped from each species. The measurements and calculations were made and chromosome lengths were standardized as a percent of a total complement length. Chromosomes were counted in the preparation of gill and gonad tissues from the two species Aplysia dactylomela and Aplysia punctata collected from different localities along the coasts of the Red Sea from Hurghada to Qusier City in Upper Egypt. A basic diploid chromosome number of 24 and 32 were presented in Aplysia dactylomela and A. punctata respectively. In the former one the karyotype consists of: seven metacentric pairs, two subtelocentric pairs and three telocentric pairs, while in the latter one the karyotype consists of just one group which contain sixteen metacentric pairs of chromosomes. These results are reported for the first time in Egypt.
