The thermodynamics lecture process in odd semester 2019/2020 at the Physics Education Department of FKIP Unsyiah is divided into three stages based on the lecture method used, namely; (1) lecture method, virtual experiments, and discussions, (2) assignments and group presentations, and (3) innovative discussions inspired by the idea of a “Guru Penggerak.” Modification from the innovation of the discussion method is carried out by the strategy of (a) not limiting the topic of discussion, (b) online discussion using WhatsApp (WA) group lectures. The study was conducted to determine the response of students to the innovations carried out. The research results are used to develop lecture method innovations, to improve the quality of the lecture process. Students’ perceptions of the ability of lecturers, the activeness of learning, the environment of learning, and the absorption of lecture material are the problems examined in this study. The research method used was quasi-experimental, and the student perception data were obtained using a questionnaire given to 20 students as respondents. In addition, qualitative methods are used to analyze student perception data. The analysis results used a score on a scale of 1-4, obtained an average score of students’ perceptions of the ability of lecturers by 3.78, learning activeness 3.15, learning environment 3.43, and absorption of lecture material 3.49. The conclusion is that lecturers’ ability to manage lectures is excellent, students are active in lectures, the learning environment is pleasant, and absorption of higher lecture material. Therefore, discussion method innovation can be developed to enrich the learning method to improve the quality of the Thermodynamics lecture process.
The constraints of the limited practicum facilities for Physics lessons in Bener Meriah Regency High School schools can be overcome by virtual laboratory practicum. Learning technology using a virtual laboratory experiment method based on Smart Phone is given to Physics teachers in the district so that they can use simple information technology applications in learning. The subject matter of physics used in this training was Waves and Optics. This activity is gradually carried out to pioneer the realization of physics learning in high schools following the demands of the industrial era 4.0. The output is expected to improve the pedagogical quality of teachers, the learning process, and to overcome the limitations of Physics practicum tools, and to support online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic. The activity was attended by 10 high school teachers in Bener Meriah Regency. All participants were able to master the transfer of technology provided. They are optimistic that this IT technology can be implemented in the learning of Wave and Optical material Physics in their schools on duty. 100% of trainees are satisfied with the service and expect will be any similar activities to be continued for other Physics materials.
Learning in the Covid-19 era requires lecturers and students not to study in the same place. This condition is a new challenge for lecturers and students to continue implementing effective learning using a suitable approach that is blended learning. This research is a preliminary study to determine the difficulties of lecturers in implementing blended learning at Department of Physics Education, FKIP – Universitas Syiah Kuala. The method used in this research is a survey using a questionnaire containing 30 statements. The indicators measured in this study were 9 (nine) indicators from 2 aspects, namely the readiness and skills of lecturers in implementing blended learning in the Covid-19 era. The questionnaire was distributed to 15 lecturers in the Department of Physics Education, and the results of the responses obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results of the analysis show that 29.23% of lecturers are not ready to apply the blended learning approach because 53.85% of lecturers rarely access the internet and learning platforms to facilitate lecture activities, so they are not used to using it. 44% of lecturers are not yet skilled in using learning platforms which are shown by 46.16% of lecturers having difficulty changing the general appearance of the virtual class, and 46.15% of lecturers have difficulty interacting using the learning platform. These difficulties are the obstacles for lecturers to apply the blended learning approach in lecture activities, so it is necessary to immediately find solutions to help the lecturer difficulties so that lectures in the Covid-19 era continue to run effectively like previous lectures. Keywords: Blended Learning, Covid-19, Lecturer Difficulties, Obstacles
This study aims to determine the perceptions of students in physics education department, faculty of teacher training and education - Universitas Syiah Kuala who have just learned (novice learners) using the blended learning approach during the Covid-19 pandemic. This research is quantitative research with data collection using the form of questionnaires and interviews. The questionnaire to measure novice learners’ perceptions used a semantic differential scale. The indicators measured consist of 5 aspects, including: technology, classroom management, instructors, interaction, and instruction. The population of this study was all students of the Physics Education Department, faculty of teacher training and education - Universitas Syiah Kuala. Purposive sampling technique was used to select sample and obtained 250 novice learners of blended learning approach. The data analysis technique used is descriptive statistical analysis through the process of data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions. The results of this study indicate that the perception of novice learners of the blended learning approach is positive at 87.92%. However, there is still a negative perception on each indicator with a different percentage value. The Indicator of technological at 14.52%, class management at 11.32%, instructors at 10,99%, interaction at 11,70%, and instruction at 12.60%. The results of the research are expected to be of concern for lecturers in the physics education department to find out the obstacles of students in distance learning during the pandemic period and can be used as a reference for improving and developing distance learning using a blended learning approach to make it better.
