However, the threat status of only a small number has been evaluated compared with key animal groups, rendering the magnitude and nature of the risks plants face unclear. Here we report the results of a global species assessment for the largest plant taxon evaluated to date under the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List Categories and Criteria, the iconic Cactaceae (cacti). We show that cacti are among the most threatened taxonomic groups assessed to date, with 31% of the 1,478 evaluated species threatened, demonstrating the high anthropogenic pressures on biodiversity in arid lands. The distribution of threatened species and the predominant threatening processes and drivers are different to those described for other taxa. The most significant threat processes comprise land conversion to agriculture and aquaculture, collection as biological resources, and residential and commercial development. The dominant drivers of extinction risk are the unscrupulous collection of live plants and seeds for horticultural trade and private ornamental collections, smallholder livestock ranching and smallholder annual agriculture. We evaluated the effects of land use on the distribution of 3 sympatric species of armadillos, Chaetophractus villosus, C. vellerosus, and Dasypus hybridus, on 34 farms in the eastern Pampas. We characterized 4 soil and vegetation variables around each burrow located during surveys of these farms, and related burrow abundance to 10 variables used to characterize each farm. C. vellerosus was the most specialized, using primarily native woodlands and areas with calcareous soil. D. hybridus was associated with natural grasslands and avoided cultivated pastures, and was negatively related to the number of dogs that lived on the farms. C. villosus, the most abundant species, was found in all 4 types of habitats, but its distribution depended on the intensity of hunting on each farm.
The xenarthrans are the only group of mammals that originated in South America; there are 31 living species: six sloths, four anteaters, and 21 armadillos. In Argentina, 18 species of xenarthrans were cited. The objectives of this study were to compile the existing information on the distribution of the xenarthrans of Argentina, to use species distribution models to map the potential distribution of these species, and to assess patterns of species richness of this important group of mammals. We obtained a total of 975 records corresponding to 706 different collecting localities from Argentina. We generated species distribution models for 15 of the 18 species present in the country. Virtually all of Argentina is occupied by xenarthrans. The highest richness of species is in the north and northeast of the country in the humid and arid Chaco, probably in relation with the mosaic of ecosystems recorded in these regions. These ecoregions have different degrees of habitat degradation and continues to be a major threat for the viability of the xenarthrans occurring there. The information given in this contribution is an input to clarify occurrence and distribution of this group of mammals.

Basic knowledge on the biology and ecology of a species is fundamental for the realistic assessment of its conservation status and for planning effective conservation strategies. The latest assessment of the 21 extant armadillo species (Xenarthra, Dasypodidae) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) for its Red List of Threatened Species shows that considerable gaps exist in our knowledge of these Neotropical mammals. Our goal was to analyse the existing literature on armadillos to define thematic and regional research priorities that will eventually benefit their conservation. We categorized 3117 publications on extant armadillos published between 1660 and 2011 according to their research topic, species studied, country and publication language. The number of publications per research topic and the number per species were very variable. The nine best‐studied species are classed as Least Concern by the IUCN, while three of the four least‐studied species are classed as Data Deficient. At least one field study was done in each range country, but over 80% of field research took place in the USA, Brazil, Argentina and Bolivia. Most research was done in the USA on leprosy in Dasypus novemcinctus. Most ecological research has been focused on four species, and data on the ecology of Data Deficient and Vulnerable taxa are virtually absent. Field research on armadillos should be intensified to broaden conservation‐relevant knowledge. Additional studies in the Guianas, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela and Paraguay are urgently needed to assess the conservation status of armadillos in these regions. Future research should focus on ecology, conservation, population genetics, reproduction and threats. Species priorities should include country endemics, such as Dasypus pilosus (Peru), Tolypeutes tricinctus (Brazil) and Dasypus yepesi and Chlamyphorus truncatus (Argentina), as well as other Data Deficient and Vulnerable species, especially Cabassous centralis and Calyptophractus retusus.

Acta Theriologica 50: 115-124.Burrows and tunnels built by Chaetophractus villosus (Desmarest, 1804) (hairy armadillo) were studied in a farming area located in the Argentinean pampas, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. Fifty-six structures were selected and carefully excavated for this study. Data on diameter, form, and orientation of the entrance, angle, length, and depth of the galleries, and spatial distribution of the structures were recorded. The structures were separated into two types: simple and complex, both located in high terrain. Simple structures are shorter than complex ones and are built when animals are in search of food or as temporary shelters. Complex structures are built as home burrows. Xenarthrans—anteaters, sloths, and armadillos—have essential functions for ecosystem maintenance, such as insect control and nutrient cycling, playing key roles as ecosystem engineers. Because of habitat loss and fragmentation, hunting pressure, and conflicts with domestic dogs, these species have been threatened locally, regionally, or even across their full distribution ranges. The Neotropics harbor 21 species of armadillos, 10 anteaters, and 6 sloths. Our data set includes the families Chlamyphoridae (13), Dasypodidae (7), Myrmecophagidae (3), Bradypodidae (4), and Megalonychidae (2). We have no occurrence data on Dasypus pilosus (Dasypodidae). Regarding Cyclopedidae, until recently, only one species was recognized, but new genetic studies have revealed that the group is represented by seven species. In this data paper, we compiled a total of 42,528 records of 31 species, represented by occurrence and quantitative data, totaling 24,847 unique georeferenced records. The geographic range is from the southern United States, Mexico, and Caribbean countries at the northern portion of the Neotropics, to the austral distribution in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. Regarding anteaters, Myrmecophaga tridactyla has the most records (n = 5,941), and Cyclopes sp. have the fewest (n = 240). The armadillo species with the most data is Dasypus novemcinctus (n = 11,588), and the fewest data are recorded for Calyptophractus retusus (n = 33). With regard to sloth species, Bradypus variegatus has the most records (n = 962), and Bradypus pygmaeus has the fewest (n = 12). Our main objective with Neotropical Xenarthrans is to make occurrence and quantitative data available to facilitate more ecological research, particularly if we integrate the xenarthran data with other data sets of Neotropical Series that will become available very soon (i.e., Neotropical Carnivores, Neotropical Invasive Mammals, and Neotropical Hunters and Dogs). Therefore, studies on trophic cascades, hunting pressure, habitat loss, fragmentation effects, species invasion, and climate change effects will be possible with the Neotropical Xenarthrans data set.
