Abstract-This article is part of research and development under the issue of developing English textbooks oriented to the enhancement of higher order thinking skills (HOTS) for students of vocational high schools (VHSs) in Yogyakarta. This relies on the evidence that the existing textbooks for secondary school levels put an emphasis on memorizing and comprehending which highlight to identify linguistic features of the target language (micro-language skills). This leads to creating the failure of acquiring English language proficiency on the part of students of secondary school levels including students of VHSs. To obtain the objective, there were 14 English teachers and 320 students of vocational high schools from three regencies, namely Sleman, Yogyakarta city, and Bantul voluntarily involved. Three techniques: questionnaire distributions, interviews, and documentation were administered to get data. Then, the gathered data were analyzed using a descriptive qualitative method. In reference to data analysis, four findings are documented as explored in this part of this article. In summary, the development of the English textbooks oriented to HOTS is positively responded by the respondents as the English textbook triggers students of VHSs to establish their higher order thinking skills which lead to students' creativity and self-regulated learning practices.Index Terms-higher order thinking skills, lower order thinking skills, English textbook

In the twenty-first century life, the demand to become an intercultural speaker becomes very crucial. It is seen through the incremental important attention of having an intercultural communicative competence (ICC) which is seen as one of the main key competencies in global world-wide. This condition urges any teacher to master the ICC completely as to assist their students to become intercultural speakers in multicultural situations. However, this competence has not been noticed thoroughly by Indonesian EFL teachers since most of them are reluctant to develop their competence in term of integrating the elements of ICC into their teaching-learning process. Hence, this present article recommends a number of competencies related to ICC’s elements in which the Indonesian EFL teachers should have, namely, the linguistic, sociolinguistic, discourse, and intercultural competence which are considered able to aid the Indonesian EFL teachers in enhancing the students’ ICC.

Islamic junior high schools have more duties than the public schools. They have the duty of teaching Islamic values to their students because these schools are established based on Islamic teachings. Islamic values must be included in all aspects of the school program. The materials used for teaching the students should also contain Islamic values. Unfortunately, based on the writers' observation, not all Islamic junior high schools integrate Islamic values in the materials taught to the students. This fact challenges the English teachers in Islamic schools to select and to consider the appropriate values, cultures, and ideologies in teaching and learning English process. As a result, this paper is based on a study conducted to develop materials which integrate Islamic values for teaching Speaking in a private junior high school in Yogyakarta. The study was aimed to reveal the students' needs in relation to the integration of the Islamic values in the materials for teaching the speaking skill and to know the appropriateness of the materials. This is an R & D study. To design the textbook the ADDIE Model was employed. To meet the textbook appropriateness, the designed textbook is analysed by conducting theoretical and empirical validation. The result of the study indicates that the designed materials are appropriate to be used in the Islamic schools.
Accommodating learners’ individual differences including personalities and language learning strategies is important in implementing the learner-centred instruction. This current research investigated the correlation of EFL learners’ Big Five personalities, language learning strategies, and speaking skills. It tried to answer the questions if there is (a) any correlation between the EFL learners’ Big Five personalities and speaking skills, (b) any correlation between the EFL learners’ learning strategies and speaking skills, and (c) any correlation between the predictor variables (EFL learners’ Big Five personalities and language learning strategies) and the criterion variable (speaking skills). This present study involved 357 students from 3 senior high schools in Pontianak, West Kalimantan, academic year 2018/2019. The data were obtained through questionnaires and speaking test. The data were analysed using statistical analysis through correlational and regression tests to answer the research questions. The results revealed that there was no significant correlation found between the EFL learners’ Big Five personalities and speaking skills (Sig. (2tailed)=0.464>alpha level 0.05), between the learners’ language learning strategies and speaking skills (Sig. (2tailed)=0.575>alpha level 0.05), and between the predictor variables and criterion variables (Sig. (2tailed)=0.712>alpha level 0.05). These results showed that other variables outside personality and language learning strategy might correlate to the learners’ speaking skills
The aims of this research were to design the integrated-skills materials for the four grade students of Islamic elementary schools, and to find out the appropriateness of the materials developed. The type of this research was Research and Development (R & D). The research model followed the Dick and Carey model in developing the materials which simplified into six steps. This research employed three techniques in collecting the data namely survey, interview and observation. Based on the techniques, the instruments of the research were questionnaires, the guideline for interview and observation sheets. The result of this study is the integrated-skills materials for the students of Islamic elementary school entitled “Let’s learn English” which consisted of integrated-skills activities and some Islamic values in every unit. The unit design of the materials presented the warming-up activity, the main activity including integrated skills activities, games, and grammar notes, glossary, reflection and general knowledge containing Islamic values. The appropriateness of the learning materials was shown in terms of content, language, presentation, and graphics. The developed materials were categorized as “very good” based on the expert evaluation. It achieved a final mean score of 3.7 which was in the range of 3.25 < x ≤ 4. The results of materials evaluation based on the students’ evaluation were categorized as “very good” which achieved 92.25%.
