Abstract-This article is part of research and development under the issue of developing English textbooks oriented to the enhancement of higher order thinking skills (HOTS) for students of vocational high schools (VHSs) in Yogyakarta. This relies on the evidence that the existing textbooks for secondary school levels put an emphasis on memorizing and comprehending which highlight to identify linguistic features of the target language (micro-language skills). This leads to creating the failure of acquiring English language proficiency on the part of students of secondary school levels including students of VHSs. To obtain the objective, there were 14 English teachers and 320 students of vocational high schools from three regencies, namely Sleman, Yogyakarta city, and Bantul voluntarily involved. Three techniques: questionnaire distributions, interviews, and documentation were administered to get data. Then, the gathered data were analyzed using a descriptive qualitative method. In reference to data analysis, four findings are documented as explored in this part of this article. In summary, the development of the English textbooks oriented to HOTS is positively responded by the respondents as the English textbook triggers students of VHSs to establish their higher order thinking skills which lead to students' creativity and self-regulated learning practices.Index Terms-higher order thinking skills, lower order thinking skills, English textbook
<p><em>The development of students' skills</em><em>, especially</em><em> in speaking</em><em>,</em><em> </em><em>is considered important to </em><em>get more attention because speaking skill </em><em>is </em><em>included </em><em>as one of the </em><em>productive skills that require</em><em>s</em><em> a lot of practice rather than </em><em>only learning the</em><em> theory. In mastering speaking skil</em><em>l, it is regarded necessary to</em><em> not only understand what others are talking about but also to respond and communicate effectively</em><em> with others</em><em>. </em><em>Thus, a m</em><em>aximum use of instructional media, especially YouTube, is considered necessary </em><em>in enhancing</em><em> the development of student</em><em>s’ speaking</em><em> skill</em><em> as a crucial capability to be possessed </em><em>in the 21st century. The purpose of this study is</em><em> mainly</em><em> to describe YouTube's maximum use in terms of practice</em><em> as well as disclose </em><em>the benefits of using YouTube as a media learning.</em></p>
<p><em>Interaction takes crucial part in English language teaching and learning. It could determine the successfulness of teaching and learning in the classroom. Relying on the fact, interaction becomes the main means for teacher and students to exchange their ideas, feelings, opinions, insights, and etc. Especially for the teachers themselves, maintaining interaction with students is considered to be very important thing. In this case, teachers need to employ some proper strategies and approaches in order to deal with such kind of activity. Nowadays, a great number of teachers apply student-centered approach more than teacher-centered one in the way they teach English. Student-centered approach is believed to be able to encourage the teachers to raise their awareness to interact more with the students by implementing Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). In this library-based research paper, the writers would like to elevate the importance of classroom interaction in Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) as an important means for teachers in their respective classrooms.</em></p>
This article examines how leather craft industry contributes to tourism development in Magetan East Java Indonesia and vice versa. This study applied a qualitative approach and is descriptive in nature. Techniques of collecting data include site observation, interview, document review, and focus group discussion. Data were analyzed using the interactive model and thematic analysis. Research results indicate four themes. First, leather craft industry in Magetan that is mostly home industry has been empowered in many ways. Several aspects, including a high number of tourist visits, local government policy, abundant human resources, and industrious businessmen have strengthened the industry. Some local government policies have been implemented in several programs to develop the industry. Second, quality products and new design innovation for leather crafts are limited. Most products that are dominated by shoes and sandals are created for lower-middle-income consumers. Third, leather craft industries in Magetan have contributed to the establishment of local entrepreneurship, small-medium enterprises, and tourism. They create job opportunities for the locals and boost the local economy. Fourth, the relationship between leather craft centers and tourism activities is dominated by tourists’ purchase of leather craft products for souvenirs. However, tourism activity in the area is not yet aimed at watching and involving tourists in the process of craft making for educational tourism purposes.
This study deals with the voices of English teachers and their students on the use of blended culture as a model of English
Limited conceptual knowledge, and the lack of competencies and skills in the discharge of duties have been part of the challenges faced by some teachers within the South African school system. One of the reasons attributed to this is poor teacher development programmes in some of the training institutions. This study explored the impact of mentorship development on pre-service teachers from a university in South Africa. The five-factor model of mentoring namely, personal attributes, system requirements, pedagogical knowledge, modelling, and feedback was employed as a theoretical lens. The purpose was to understand the attributes and practices mentors transfer to their mentees (student teachers) during their teaching practice. Located in the interpretive paradigm, the research employed a qualitative case study design to generate data through semi-structured interviews from 26 B.Ed Honours pre-service teachers, purposively selected as the study sample. A thematic approach was used to analyse the data generated. Findings from the analyses revealed that pre-service teachers were positively impacted mostly in the development of pedagogical knowledge, followed by system requirements, personal attributes, modelling and feedback. The findings support the Five-Factor mentoring Model as a valid and useful framework for measuring the impact of the mentoring received by pre-service teachers on teaching practicum. The study concludes that mentoring activity in pre-service teacher education is an important component of professional development for effective teachers. Based on this conclusion, the study recommends that mentors support student teachers in the development of the necessary skills and competencies required of a professional teacher.
This dataset aims to examine the effect of Organizational Commitment (OC) factors on Job Performance (JP) and Job Satisfaction (JS) at Islamic schools in Indonesia. The data propose that OC factors (Affective Commitment (AC), Normative Commitment (NC), and Continuance Commitment (CC)) have significant influences on JS and JP. Through the survey approach, 387 responses were obtained from Islamic schoolteachers in Indonesia. Face and content validity were initiated after the adaptation of the survey instrument. Further, a Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Model (PLS-SEM) was used to test the reliability and validity of the measurement model. For this purpose, the statistical process presents reflective indicator loadings, internal consistency reliability, and convergent and discriminant validity. Future researchers may reuse this dataset as a potential instrument to measure factors affecting job satisfaction and job performance within the context of education.
This study is aimed at investigating the effects of L2-based and code-switching-based instruction in teaching Indonesian EFL primary level speaking classes by comparing and examining any potential correspondences between the uses of two different instructions with students’ improved speaking achievement. The participant of the study consisted of 70 seventh grade students at a Junior High School in Central Java Province, Indonesia. The samples were divided into two groups: experimental and control group. The former was taught using L2-based-instruction (L2BI) and the later was taught using the most common instruction used i.e. code-switching-based-instruction (CBI). A speaking performance test was developed by the researcher and administered before and after the experiment as pre-test and post-test. The data was analyzed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The finding of the study revealed significant differences (0α 05) between the groups in support of the experimental group.
