The effects of weather/season (winter and summer), milk production (high and low), and milking time (night and day) on melatonin levels were evaluated. The melatonin in the milk from 30 individual cows, the bulk tank milk (BTM) from 16 farms, and ultra-high temperature (UHT) processed milk of 12 brands over two seasons were also assessed. The melatonin average concentration was 6.98 pg/mL in the cows' milk, 4.71 pg/mL in the BTM, and 5.62 pg/mL in the UHT milk. In the night milk, the melatonin concentration averaged 14.87 pg/mL, whereas it was 6.98 pg/mL in the total daily milk. In winter, the milk melatonin concentration was, on average, 74.7% higher than in the summer (13.89 vs. 7.95 pg/mL). The night milk from the low production group in winter also had a higher concentration of melatonin (41.94 pg/mL). The variables related to illuminance, such as the time of milking and season of the year, had considerable effects on the melatonin concentration in milk. Collecting and marketing melatonin-rich milk could benefit populations and agribusiness. ARTICLE HISTORY

ResumoBovinos holandeses, girolandos e mestiços são os principais responsáveis pela produção de leite no Brasil. A raça e o número de lactações são fatores que podem afetar essa produtividade, bem como características do leite. O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar a influência do grupo racial e do número de lactações sobre a produção leiteira, a composição físico-química e a contagem de células somáticas (CCS) do leite de bovinos Holandeses, Girolandos e mestiços. Dados de uma propriedade rural, no norte do Paraná, foram coletados entre os anos de 2006 e 2011. A relação entre os parâmetros foi analisada por meio de teste de correlação, e os efeitos do número de lactações (1-6) e do grupo racial por análise de variância (ANOVA). As diferenças entre as médias foram avaliadas através de teste de Tukey. A raça Holandesa apresentou maior produtividade diária de leite (p<0,05). Os animais mestiços e Girolandos apresentaram teores de proteínas, de lipídios e de sólidos totais do leite, semelhantes e superiores aos animais da raça Holandesa. Os grupos raciais não diferiram quanto à CCS e teor de lactose do leite. Produção leiteira e CCS aumentaram até a 3ª e a 5ª lactações, respectivamente, enquanto os teores de lactose decaíram continuamente após a 1ª lactação e os de lipídios e de proteínas praticamente não se alteraram. Todas as correlações entre os parâmetros foram significativas sendo as maiores correlações verificadas entre produção leiteira, teores de proteínas e de lactose, teor de sólidos totais e teores de lipídios e de proteínas, teor de lipídios e teor de proteínas, e para CCS e teor de lactose. A raça Holandesa mostrou-se mais produtiva, porém com menor teor de lipídios e proteínas do que o da raça Girolando e de animais mestiços, os quais apresentaram características do leite e de produtividade semelhantes entre si. ResumoObjetivou-se com este experimento avaliar os efeitos de inoculantes microbianos sobre as perdas por gases e efluentes, recuperação de matéria seca, pH, ácidos graxos voláteis e composição bromatológica de silagens de bagaço de laranja, usando-se um delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com quatro tratamentos e quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram: silagem de bagaço de laranja (CONT), silagem de bagaço de laranja + Lactobacillus plantarum (LAC), silagem de bagaço de laranja + Lactobacillus buchneri (BUCH); silagem de bagaço de laranja + Lactobacillus plantarum e buchneri (LACBUCH). Os inoculantes foram aplicados na razão de 25 litros de solução por tonelada de forragem, contendo 1x10 3 UFC respectivamente de Lactobacillus plantarum e de Lactobacillus buchneri por grama de silagem. Não houve efeito do uso de diferentes inoculantes sobre as perdas por gases e efluentes, assim como no pH. Os teores de matéria seca, proteína bruta, carboidratos não fibrosos, matéria mineral, extrato etéreo e o perfil de ácidos graxos não sofreram alterações significativas com a inclusão dos inoculantes. Os teores de fibra em detergente neutro e fibra em detergente ácido foram superiores para a silagem com Lactobacillus buchneri em relação à silagem controle. O uso de inoculantes microbianos na silagem de bagaço de laranja não resulta em benefícios relacionados às perdas durante a ensilagem ou componentes nutricionais. The treatments were: orange pulp silage (CONT), citrus pulp silage + Lactobacillus plantarum (LAC), citrus pulp silage + Lactobacillus buchneri (BUCH), citrus pulp silage + Lactobacillus plantarum and buchneri (LACBUCH). The current study aims to assess the effect from crude glycerin inclusion (0, 7, 14, and 21% dry matter) in the diet of slaughtered lamb on their development, nutrient consumption, biometrical measures, diet economic viability and carcass features. Thirty two (32) non-castrated male Texel lambs were used in the study, they presented mean initial weight 15.9 ± 4.1 kilos and were distributed in casual outlining. They were fed with four treatments, with 8 repetitions. Animals were slaughtered when they reached approximately 35 kilos. The mean total weight gain was 20.72 kilos and mean daily weight gain was 260 grams. No changes resulted from glycerin use. The carcass performance was similar among treatments (P>0.05) and the cold carcass performance (CCP) was 44.68%. There were no effects (P>0.05) on the loin eye area (LEA) and on fat thickness (FT); they showed averages of 13.66 cm 2 and 0.84 mm, respectively. Nutrition cost per animal during the whole confinement period varied between R$82.60 (eighty-two Reais and forty-eight cents) to R$92.48. The smallest nutrition amount consisted of 21% crude glycerin. The gross profit ranged from R$30.75 to R$ 34.01 per animal, for feed without glycerin and 21% glycerin, respectively. Animal development was not impacted by glycerin introduction, even with decrease on dry and organic mass consumption. The result showed that crude glycerin inclusion might be used in lambs' diet. Whenever there are big amounts of feed involved in the process, the 21% crude glycerin addition may be an interesting cost reduction. Seventy eight percent (78%) glycerol crude glycerin to replace corn-based feed in confined lambs' diet appeared to be nutritionally and economically viable. ResumoO objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar o efeito dos teores de inclusão de glicerina bruta (0, 7, 14, e 21% da matéria seca) na dieta de cordeiros em terminação, sobre o desempenho, o consumo de nutrientes, as medidas biométricas, a viabilidade econômica da dieta e características da carcaça. Utilizou-se 32 cordeiros machos não castrados da raça Texel, com peso médio inicial de 15,9 ± 4,1 kg, distribuídos em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com quatro tratamentos e oito repetições. Ao atingir o peso médio de 35 kg, os animais foram abatidos. O ganho de peso total foi em média 20,72 kg e o ganho de peso médio diário foi de 260 g e não sofreram alterações com o uso da glicerina. As características de rendimento de carcaça avaliadas se assemelharam entre os tratamentos (P>0,05) e o rendimento de carcaça fria (RCF) foi em média 44,68%. Não houve efeito (P>0,05) para área de olho de lombo (AOL) e espessura de gordura (EG), apresentando médias de 13,66 cm 2 e 0,84 mm, respectivamente. Este estudo teve o objetivo de quantificar os efeitos do grupo genético, estresse térmico e a contagem de células somáticas (ECS) sobre a produção de leite de vacas das raças Holandesa, Jersey e genótipos da raça Girolando, em clima subtropical. Foram utilizados 14181 registros de controle leiteiro mensal das raças Girolando, Jersey e Holandesa, durante 7 anos. As vacas foram mantidas em pastagens, com suplementação alimentar e acesso à sombra. Dados de estação meteorológica foram utilizados para a determinação do Índice de Temperatura e Umidade (THI). Ano, ordem da lactação, período de lactação, THI e ECS foram fixados como covariáveis. A raça Holandesa obteve maior produtividade, exceto de gordura. Na raça Girolando, a produção de leite e lactose não diferiu da raça Jersey, sendo os demais parâmetros de produção inferiores a esta raça. As concentrações de componentes do leite (%) foram maiores no leite da raça Jersey, exceto o teor de lactose. A raça Holandesa apresentou os menores teores de componentes do leite, exceto de lactose. O aumento de ECS resultou em diminuição da produção de leite que totalizou 26,3; 35,43 e 28,25% nas raças Girolando, Jersey e Holandesa, respectivamente. A elevação do THI teve maiores efeitos na raça Holandesa, na qual o aumento do THI diminuiu 12,4% da concentração de gordura e 5,5% de sólidos totais no leite. Conclui-se que a maior produtividade foi obtida com a raça Holandesa e maior qualidade com a raça Jersey. ECS acima de um diminui linearmente a produção de leite em todas as raça. Raças com maior proporção de genes da raça Holandesa são mais susceptíveis ao estresse térmico.

<p class="Pa7">The aims of present study were to evaluate the effects of milk somatic cell count (SCC) and heat stress on yield and milk composition of cows in a herd for commercial production in a temperate region during the period 2008-2012. Data from the monthly milk test-day records of 161±9 Holstein, totaling 9,650 milkings, were provided by the Association of Holstein Cattle Breeders of Parana State, and analyzed by descriptive analysis, correlation, analysis of variance, and regression analysis. The average daily milk yield was 31.78 kg/cow, which decreased to 29.31% when the somatic cell score (SCS) was 9, and to 11% when the Equivalent Temperature Index (ETI) was 32 or above. Lactose content decreased from SCS 0 until 9 and fat content decreased from SCS 1 until 9, totaling decrease 7.88 and 9.23%, respectively, when the SCS was 9. An opposite effect was observed for the protein content, which increased by 3.6% at SCS 8, when compared to SCS 0. Losses were observed in the daily total solids production from the SCS 0, totaling 30.64% at SCS 9.The increase in ETI to 32 or above reduced all milk constituents as much as 3.42%, except protein. These results, combined with the losses in milk yield at that ETI level, led to a decrease of up to 12.74% of milk solids. It is concluded that since losses in milk quality and yield resulting from SCC and ETI are significant, actions to prevent infection in the mammary gland and to provide a comfortable environment for dairy cattle are needed even in temperate regions.</p>

Bovine milk whey is a co-product of the dairy agroindustry that has potential for use in lamb feeding. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of bovine milk whey on the performance, carcass characteristics, and meat quality of finishing lambs. Eighteen male lambs were distributed in three treatments (control diet-CD, diet with whey powder-DWP, and diet with liquid whey-DLW) with six replicates. The performance variables, loin-eye area measurements, cover and subcutaneous fat, marbling, yield, morphometry, conformation, and finishing of the carcasses were evaluated. There was a difference in the dry matter intake, with the CD (3.22%) and DWP (3.08%) treatments having higher levels than that of the DLW (2.46%) treatment. The averages for loin-eye area, subcutaneous fat, and marbling were 9.88 cm 2 , 2.97 mm, and 1.39, respectively. There was a difference among the treatments for ethereal extract content of the meat; it was higher in CD (7.90%) and lower in DLW (5.19%). The inclusion of bovine milk whey did not alter the quantitative and qualitative parameters of the carcass; however, it altered the levels of ethereal extract content in the meat.
