The indeterminacy of the domestic space is one of the main trends in flexible housing design. It involves the possibility of using the rooms in a dwelling in multiple ways that are not determined by the architect. The views of non-functionalist housing are more present lately, but still forbidden in the Spanish social housing market, where regulations stipulate a strict functionalist housing plan. However, there is a good example of this strategy in Madrid: the Casa de las Flores, a rationalist building from 1931 with a neutral plan of polyvalent rooms. This study comprises a series of interviews with the users, photographs, diagrams and new drawings that show how people use their apartments. The aim of this research is to assess the validity of indeterminacy as an architectural response to social changes in Spain, with a view to its introduction in future housing developments.
AppQuitectura is an educational innovation project conceived to design a mobile application which will be used as a reinforcement tool in the acquisition of architectural knowledge by students. Based on ICT and financed by the Polytechnic University of Madrid, it is being developed by a group of professors from the UPM Schools of Architecture and Computer Science. AppQ seeks to create an application for mobile platforms, with a Quiz game format, conceived as a teaching support for subjects belonging to the Architectural Composition Area of the Fundamentals of Architecture Degree. This communication presents the strategic lines, the content and the graphic design of the project, developed during the spring of 2022. The usability test results and the approach to the second phase of the project are discussed in the communication entitled «AppQuitectura: initial results and next challenges».
AppQuitectura is a reinforcement tool for learning the subjects of the Architectural Composition Knowledge Area, which uses the game to encourage the approach to the more theoretical subjects of architectural studies. Created as an educational innovation project obtained in a competitive call of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), it consists of a game of questions and answers, with weekly challenges, which tries to take advantage of the widespread use of mobile phones among university students. After a year of hard work by a multidisciplinary team made up of UPM professors from the fields of Architecture and Computer Science, this communication reviews the first tests carried out after its design and before its definitive launch to students, which have detected small errors, but, above all, have shown the possibilities of success of the tool in the student community.
