ResumoDeve o diploma específico ser uma exigência para o profissional de jornalismo? Tal questão ganhou nova atualidade em 2001, quando uma decisão judicial suspendeu provisoriamente a obrigatoriedade do diploma, vigente desde 1969. Desde então, outras sentenças foram enunciadas. A cada uma delas, seguiu-se um animado debate, travado por insiders e outsiders da comunidade profissional jornalística acerca da obrigatoriedade do diploma e, por tabela, do conjunto de critérios que definem o profissionalismo no jornalismo. Este trabalho analisa tal debate, entendendo-o como um objeto privilegiado para investigar como, no Brasil, a comunidade jornalística define -ou melhor, negocia -suas fronteiras profissionais.Palavras-chave: diploma; jornalismo; profissionalismo; Observatório da Imprensa; comunidade interpretativa "Não há tantos não-diplomados querendo trabalhar em jornal quanto pensam os paranóicos de plantão. [...] Aliás, todos eles poderiam estar ganhando muito mais em suas profissões de formação. [...] O fato é que, para desejar trabalhar numa profissão cujo atual piso salarial em São Paulo não chega a R$ 1500 (pouco mais do que ganha uma faxineira, se ela trabalhar aos sábados também) tem de ser ou muito trouxa ou amar muito o que escolheu fazer. E essa liberdade de amar o que se faz deve ser defendida a todo custo" (Buongermino, 2001).
