This article attempts to conceptualize the notion of ‘public sphere’ from the perspectives of Reformed theology and religious studies. This construction proceeds using a largely forgotten theological concept put forth by Calvin, namely the theater of God’s glory, in tandem with Ninian Smart’s phenomenological scaffold of the seven dimensions of religion. Through this constructive act, the author intends to demonstrate that Calvin’s concept of the theater of God’s glory can become a kind of ‘public sphere’ by means of an integration of thought with the aid of religious studies.
This article calls Christians to engage in true, transformative action, in Indonesia. To attain to such an alluring provocation, I employ the theatrical ideas of Kevin J. Vanhoozer—namely his thought contribution of "the drama of doctrine"—which I propose finds a suitable complement in Miroslav Volf’s "prophetic religion"- descriptor of Christianity." The combination results in the constructive theopoetic composite I call "transformative drama"—namely, theatrical Christian action that effects change within and leverage impact upon the social locations of the transformative-active Christian.
This article was written as a preliminary opinion to explore the "public face" of evangelicalism as a movement in Indonesia. Furthermore, this article will discuss who are the evangelicals in Indonesia, the theological characteristics from the evangelicals, and the form of evangelical's participation in Indonesia. The writer will argue that the modification from Bebbington's Quadrilateral, Larsen's Pentagram, can be theological characteristics from the evangelicals in Indonesia. As a consequence, this article will propose two ways of movements from evangelicalism in Indonesia, which are the inward and outward movements. The inward movement is the spirit of the evangelical church to reform itself, while the outward flow is the eagerness of the evangelical church to reform the social condition. Thus, these are initial observations for shaping evangelicalism in Indonesia.
This article discusses an explorative proposal for inter-faith dialogue based on the life of Jesus amid the development of religious and tribal diversity in the city in Indonesia. The rising migration and urbanization will bring diversity to a new height in Indonesia. Hence, dialogue is a must amid the irresistible context. This proposal for dialogue will be based on Kevin J. Vanhoozer's dramatic method through the fusion of horizons which proposes how to apply biblical passages to everyday life. The reflective-explorative study of John 4:7–21 resulted in three recommendations as a form of horizon fusion in the context of ethnic and religious pluralism in the city, namely: the dialogue of reconciliation, the dialogue of friendship, and the dialogue of theology.
