O ensaio teórico versa sobre propostas que se opõem a ideia convencional de desenvolvimento que é propagada aos quatro cantos do mundo como panaceia universal para todos os problemas das sociedades ditas “subdesenvolvidas”. Mas ao contrário de sua promessa, além de não melhorar as condições de vida das populações do “terceiro mundo” ainda contribui no agravamento da crise socioambiental. Discorre sobre o conceito de Convivencialidade que desde a década de 1970 questiona o modelo de vida imposto pela sociedade industrial. Trata também da corrente do Decrescimento voltada ao questionamento do desenvolvimento focado no crescimento econômico infinito em um planeta com recursos finitos e finalmente aborda o Bem Viver corrente de pensamento articulada desde a América Latina baseada nas ontologias e cosmovisões dos povos originários.
Este estudo relata uma pesquisa documental qualitativa realizada em três ecovilas de diferentes tamanhos: pequena, média e grande, conforme o número de habitantes, sendo estas localizadas no Brasil, Chile e Escócia. A pesquisa faz parte de uma pesquisa de mestrado do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Tecnologia (PPGTE) da Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná-UTFPR, em sua linha de pesquisa relacionada a sustentabilidade. O Design de Ecovila é voltado ao desenvolvimento de comunidades sustentáveis que incorpora as preocupações Ecológica, Social e Econômica, mais o fator "Visão de Mundo" considerado fundamental pela GEN (Global Ecovillage Network-Rede Global de Ecovilas). O objetivo principal é a analise documental qualitativa dos contratos de habitação e convivência entre as pessoas e suas relações com a natureza. As ecovilas são comunidades intencionais que possuem geralmente um enfoque determinante de preservação ambiental, respeitam todas as formas de vida e consideram o planeta terra como um organismo vivo. Fundamentam esses princípios em suas práticas espirituais, geralmente relacionadas as tradições perenes da humanidade (tradições ancestrais indígenas, budismo, cristianismo antigo entre outras) e/ ou na visão sistêmica da ciência defendida por cientistas como o físico Fritjof Capra, na Teoria de Gaia do cientista independente e ambientalista James Lovelock e da bióloga Lynn Margulis. Também são considerados os princípios da Ecologia Profunda, do filósofo Arne Naes. Diferentemente da "ecologia rasa", que tem uma visão antropocêntrica e vê a natureza como um banco de recursos naturais para exploração do homem, a "ecologia profunda" tem uma visão ecocêntrica que inclui o homem na teia da vida e propõe uma reflexão mais profunda das relações entre as pessoas com todas as formas de vida do planeta. A pesquisa busca a verificação das principais determinantes que permitem o desenvolvimento e funcionamento dessas comunidades, localizando os pontos em comum entre as três, assim como suas peculiaridades. Como resultado é possível obter uma base teórica com experiências práticas que poderá auxiliar em futuras pesquisas relacionadas ao planejamento de comunidades sustentáveis, no processo inicial de construção de novas ecovilas assim como no aprimoramento de comunidades já estabelecidas.
