Introduction: Sporotrichosis is an infectious fungal zoonosis associated with traumatic implantation in the skin of dimorphic fungi of the Sporothrix schenckii complex. The objective of this study was to diagnose sporotrichosis in patients in the city of Campos dos Goytacazes, and to establish correlations between positive laboratory results and dermatological and topographical aspects of the lesions and personal traits of the patients, such as sex, age and profession. Methodology: We collected samples from 22 patients with suspect lesions, which were sent to the laboratory for direct microscopic analysis after Gram staining, followed by mycological culture by seeding the material in 4% Sabouraud dextrose agar (Himedia®) supplemented with chloramphenicol (50 mg/Lt) and cycloheximide (400 mg/Lt - Sigma-Aldrich, USA). The dishes were incubated at 25-30oC. For confirmation of the diagnosis, the strains isolated in mycelial form were converted to yeast form by culture in yeast-peptone-dextrose (YPD) agar at 37oC for up to 15 days. Results: The positive results demonstrated that the disease was most frequently diagnosed in women between the ages of 19 and 60 years, and that 18 (81.8%) of the patients reported having contact with pet cats. The occupations of those positive for sporotrichosis were not related to the disease. The upper limbs were the body region most often afflicted, with observation in the majority of cases of ulcerated lesions, although five patients also had nodular lesions. Additionally, the observation of lymphatic cords was frequent. Conclusion: In recent years, sporotrichosis has been diagnosed with relative frequency in Campos dos Goytacazes, causing great concern among public health officials and practitioners.
The emu, also known as Australian ostrich (Dromaius novaehollandiae), is a bird species native to the Australian plains. It is considered the largest bird in Oceania, and the second largest in the world. The correct interpretation of the serological analyses is essential in the development and implementation of sanitary control measures for emus bred and reared in captivity. This study calculates a reference interval for the biochemical profile of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase, urea, creatinine, uric acid, glucose, total proteins and cholesterol in captive emus during pre-hatching and hatching stages, and compares the biochemical parameters of sera of males and females. Increased AST and cholesterol levels were observed in animals that initiated the hatching period. The values of the other parameters decreased. After hatching, all parameters exhibited a trend towards normal values. The results may be useful in the development of new breeding practices for the species, and enlarge the data available for emus.
Ischemia is responsible for many metabolic abnormalities in the heart, causing changes in organ function. One of modifications occurring in the ischemic cell is changing from aerobic to anaerobic metabolism. This change causes the predominance of the use of carbohydrates as an energy substrate instead of lipids. In this case, the glycogen is essential to the maintenance of heart energy intake, being an important reserve to resist the stress caused by hypoxia, using glycolysis and lactic acid fermentation. In order to study the glucose anaerobic pathways utilization and understand the metabolic adaptations, New Zealand white rabbits were subjected to ischemia caused by Inflow occlusion technique. The animals were monitored during surgery by pH and lactate levels. Transcription analysis of the pyruvate kinase, lactate dehydrogenase and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase enzymes were performed by qRT-PCR, and glycogen quantification was determined enzymatically. Pyruvate kinase transcription increased during ischemia, followed by glycogen consumption content. The gluconeogenesis increased in control and ischemia moments, suggesting a relationship between gluconeogenesis and glycogen metabolism. This result shows the significant contribution of these substrates in the organ energy supply and demonstrates the capacity of the heart to adapt the metabolism after this injury, sustaining the homeostasis during shortterm myocardial ischemia.
Feces were collected from 68 dairy cattle, 1 to 12 mo of age, on 12 farms in the municipality of Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and examined for the presence of Cryptosporidium sp. All samples were subjected to molecular analysis by polymerase chain reaction (nested PCR) of the 18S rRNA. Four positive samples (4.54%) were sequenced and identified as Cryptosporidium andersoni. This species represents a risk for Brazilian cattle because infection can affect cattle productivity. Moreover, C. andersoni is considered a zoonotic species.
Several studies emphasize the use of owl pellets in small mammal inventories in natural areas harboring high richness of rare species, but few Brazilian Atlantic forest localities have been surveyed by this method. The present study documents the species composition and abundance of small mammals in the diet of Tyto furcata in an urban area of the municipality of Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, remarking on a new record of the dwarf mouse opossum genus Cryptonanus in the Atlantic forest. We analyzed 265 pellets regurgitated by a pair of T. furcata from November 2016 to September 2017 found in a nesting box. Analysis of the samples enabled finding a total of 596 individuals of four small mammal species. Mus musculus was predominant among the prey items (98.3%), while the native rodents Necromys lasiurus (1.3%) and Holochilus brasiliensis (0,17%) were much rarer. A single specimen of Cryptonanus sp. was identified among the diet items based on distinctive dental characters. The identification of this genus in the present study represents the second record in the state of Rio de Janeiro, and the sixth in the Atlantic Forest biome, suggesting that this marsupial occupies a wider ecological and biogeographic range. The present study underscores the relevance of owl pellets for small mammal surveys, even in urban and highly disturbed areas.
