O artigo apresenta um estudo realizado a partir de depoimentos, prestados no decorrer de quatro anos por pessoas que escaparam ou foram libertados de unidades rurais de produção, no sul do Pará. Em todos os casos, há indícios de que os depoentes sofreram o crime de prática de trabalho análogo à escravidão. Buscou-se neste texto identificar quem fala, como fala, para quem e quando fala e a reação de autoridades ao problema. O mundo atual, apesar de apresentar o maior volume de riquezas jamais conhecido e níveis de desenvolvimento econômico, científico e tecnológico inalcançados anteriormente, se caracteriza, também, por uma dívida social inédita. O documento da OIT intitulado Estimación Mundial sobre el Trabajo Forzoso, publicado em junho de 2012, indica que em todo mundo existem perto de 20,9 milhões de pessoas exercendo atividades econômicas que se podem classificar como tal. Estas resultam de coerção ou de engano: ausência de concordância do trabalhador; imobilização, pela existência de dívidas contraídas com o patrão ou agente a seu mando, retenção de documentos e ameaças de denúncia às autoridades migratórias do país. Noventa por cento desses trabalhadores são explorados na economia privada e 14,s milhões encontram-se em atividades na agricultura, construção, trabalho doméstico, ou em manufaturas. O Código Penal Brasileiro tipifica o crime de exploração de mão de obra forçada em seu Artigo 149. De 2003 a 2012, segundo dados da Comissão Pastoral da Terra, as atividades em que o trabalho forçado foi encontrado são a pecuária (preparação de pastos) (29%) e a cultura canavieira (27%), do montante de 60.890 casos denunciados e 38.692 trabalhadores resgatados por agentes do Estado. Vale informar que é crescente a presença de casos de trabalho escravo em regiões urbanas, onde as manufaturas de roupas e a construção civil são as campeãs.Neste campo,se faz necessário não apenas investigar e punir culpados, mas promover ações as mais diversas no sentido, dentre outros da prevenção. Atualmente, vêm sendo desenvolvidos diversos tipos de campanhas de combate e prevenção do trabalho forçado no Brasil: a) algumas campanhas visam ao esclarecimento de trabalhadores envolvidos e potenciais envolvidos com situações de trabalho escravo ou análogas às mesmas; b) há campanhas dirigidas a professores e professoras de redes públicas de ensino e estão voltadas para a formação de sujeitos multiplicadores do trabalho de divulgar e prevenir futuras situações de risco, dado que se encontram atuando profissionalmente com a população infantil e juvenil de municípios onde se tem encontrado um número significativo de moradores que migram para trabalhar e findam por cair em situações de escravidão; c) Outras campanhas são dedicadas a crianças, jovens e estudantes de turmas de Educação de Jovens e Adultos; d) são realizadas atividades educativas por meio de parcerias entre instituições do Estado e da sociedade civil, como ONGs, empresários, operadores da justiça, dentre outros sujeitos. Por meio delas se pretende modificar formas de pensar e agir em relação à realidade social, buscando-se transformar características culturais que, muitas vezes, levam a que se percebam como “naturais” as formas de utilização da mão de obra de trabalhadores e trabalhadoras que desrespeitam direitos legais e legítimos, pois entende-se que sempre foi assim, ou porque todo mundo age desta forma. Tais campanhas e ações educativas poderiam ser caracterizadas por Paulo Freire como trabalhos de conscientização. Com elas, tem-se em mente transformar atitudes, modificar disposições culturais, educar sujeitos sociais envolvidos diretamente ou não com a questão do trabalho forçado, de forma a criar novas disposições a respeito de práticas que afrontam os direitos humanos e a ideia moderna de República.
Cette étude traite des actions de l’État brésilien et de la société civile relatives à l’esclavage contemporain entre 1995 et 2010, une période durant laquelle se sont succédé deux présidents de la République. Après avoir explicité le contexte politique et juridique de ces actions, les auteurs présentent thématiquement les plus significatifs des problème identifiés dans les témoignages des travailleurs s’étant enfuis ou ayant été libérés des fazendas ou des unités de production de charbon de bois de la région amazonienne (sud-est de l’État brésilien du Pará), attirant notamment l’attention sur les interlocuteurs rencontrés et la manière dont les victimes se sont adressé à eux. Ces récits montrent la violence perçue ou vécue et donnent un certain nombre d’informations sur les lieux de naissance, de résidence et de travail des personnes concernées.
