Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate and examine the mediating effect of trust and commitment on employees’ performance in the context of transformational leadership at Civilian Para-Police Force Institution. Design/methodology/approach – Leaders and employees at the Civilian Para-Police Force in Indonesia were surveyed and interviewed. Multiple regressions are used to examine and explore the direct and indirect relationship and also provide a model of transformational leadership. Findings – Transformational leadership does not directly influence towards employee performance; rather trust and commitment are found to be the mediating variables in the relationship between transformational leadership and employee performance. The result supports a model of transformational leadership that is considered to be more effective and suitable for improving performance in para-police organisations. Research limitations/implications – Limitations include the cross-sectional data analysis, the country and institutional specific focus, and a small sample size (n=132). Practical implications – Organisations with similar duties as those of the Indonesian para-police organisation could embrace the suggested transformational leadership model for the purposes of improving organisational performance through maintaining public order, while at the same time avoiding any abuse of social and religious norms, and human rights. Originality/value – This study provides a detailed account of the effectiveness of transformational leadership for para police organisations in the Indonesian context.
Purpose This study aims to determine the relationship between transformational leadership, self-efficacy, gender, intrinsic motivation and employee performance in mediating and moderating roles. Design/methodology/approach Respondents in this study were 531 hotel employees (human resources development staff, financial, relationship) in Yogyakarta who were led by women. Structural equation modeling was used to test the hypotheses using AMOS 22.0. Findings The results show that transformational leadership has a positive and significant effect on employee performance, self-efficacy acts as a mediating variable on the relationship between transformational leadership and employee performance. The results also indicate that gender acts as a moderating variable by strengthening the relationship between transformational leadership and employee performance and intrinsic motivation acts as a moderating variable by strengthening the relationship between self-efficacy and employee performance. Research limitations/implications This study has two limitations. First, the research results cannot conclude the company in general because the sampling of this study is limited to the hotel business which is led by women only. Future research is needed to explore more deeply to compare the performance of employees in companies led by women and those led by men. Second, this study uses only one independent variable. Future research needs to be done to explore the effect of other variables on company performance, such as work culture, work environment and job satisfaction. Practical implications The main managerial contribution of this study is directed to companies that are interested in developing employee performance. First, self-efficacy is able to mediate transformational leadership in achieving employee performance. Besides this research offers a clear strategy for companies to stimulate their employees to strengthen leadership individually so as to improve the quality of their work. Thus, companies can carry out leadership training that is focused on being able to recognize employees who have low self-efficacy. If this is done, the company can reduce expenses that are not small but can make a significant contribution. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to examine the mediating and moderating role of transformational leadership, employee performance, self-efficacy, gender and intrinsic motivation, especially in a hotel business led by women in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
Various technological approaches have been developed in order to help those people who are unfortunate enough to be afflicted with different types of paralysis which limit them in performing their daily life activities independently. One of the proposed technologies is the Brain-Computer Interface (BCI). The BCI system uses electroencephalography (EEG) which is generated by the subject's mental activity as input, and converts it into commands. Some previous experiments have shown the capability of the BCI system to predict the movement intention before the actual movement is onset. Thus research has predicted the movement by discriminating between data in the "rest" condition, where there is no movement intention, with "pre-movement" condition, where movement intention is detected before actual movement occurs. This experiment, however, was done to analyze the system for which machine learning was applied to data obtained in a continuous time interval, between 3 seconds before the movement was detected until 1 second after the actual movement was onset. This experiment shows that the system can discriminate the "pre-movement" condition and "rest" condition by using the EEG signal in 7-30 Hz where the Mu and Beta rhythm can be discovered with an average True Positive Rate (TPR) value of 0.64 ± 0.11 and an average False Positive Rate (FPR) of 0.17 ± 0.08. This experiment also shows that by using EEG signals obtained nearing the movement onset, the system has higher TPR or a detection rate in predicting the movement intention.
Gender equality is one important item from the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It makes a gender gap in companies' top management becomes valuable to be studied because people still have a stereotype that leadership is a masculine job. This research will test the effect of performance, payment, bankruptcy risk, and earnings management. Data is taken from Indonesian public companies in 2016 using means different statistical test. The result shows that 30.9% or minority corporation have a female director. Hence, while women were given the opportunity to lead, the companies will have better performance and compensation than their male only board of director counterparts. It is proof that gender stereotypes happen in Indonesian Public Companies Leadership.
This research is a study of the relationship between work motivation and work environment on the competitive advantage that is developed by creativity and innovation. The objective of this research is to analyze the influence of work motivation and work environment on creativity and innovation in creating competitive advantage. This research conducted at tourism location in Indonesia and China. The sample determined by purposive sampling. The total respondent from this research is 368 respondents consist of 181 from Indonesian and 187 from China.
