This study investigated school location and gender as predictors of students' performance in West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) multiple choice test in biology. The researcher adopted survey research design for the study. Sample for the study consisted of 1450 Secondary School Three (SSIII) students drawn from 20 randomly selected senior secondary schools in Ekiti State, Nigeria. The instrument used for the study was 2008 WASSCE multiplechoice Biology test paper. Findings from the study showed that significant different existed between students' performance in WASSCE multiple choice test in biology based on school location (df=1448, t=6.84, P<0.05); gender (df=1448, t=8.89, P<0.05), and school type (df=2, 1447, 1449; F=211.68, P<0.05). Based on these findings, the researcher recommended that secondary school administrators and Biology teachers should encourage male and female Biology students' to participate actively during the weekly lessons to improve their performance in WASSCE Biology Examination.
This study investigated assessment of e-learning resources utilization by students of tertiary institutions in Katsina State. The descriptive survey design was adopted for this study. Three hundred and eighty-one (381) students of tertiary institutions in Katsina State were randomly selected for the study. A researchers’ designed questionnaire titled “Utilization of E-learning Resources Questionnaire” (UERQ) with a Cronbach’s Alpha reliability coefficient of 0.85 was used to collect data. frequency, percentage, mean, t-test and ANOVA statistics were used to analyse the data collected. Findings revealed that there is no significant difference in the e-learning utilization by students of tertiary institutions in Katsina State based on gender and agebut there is significant difference based on class levels and institutions. It was recommended that Nigerian tertiary institutions general studies curriculum should be re-designed to include e-learning utilization training to help the students understand how they can utilize e-learning resources.
This study investigated the socio-cultural factors affecting integration into the formal education system in Katsina State, Nigeria. Descriptive survey design was adopted for this study. There were 653 Almajiris purposively selected from twelve Almajiris schools in Katsina State. A researcher-designed questionnaire titled: ‘‘Almajiris socio-cultural factors questionnaire’’ (ASCFQ) with test-retest reliability coefficient of 0.88 was used to collect data for the study. Analysis of data was carried out using frequencies and percentages. Findings revealed that most parents abandon their children in these informal Arabic schools. Most Almajiris (603, that is 92.3%) responded that their Mallams (Teachers) do not feed them. Therefore, the only means of survival is through begging and doing menial jobs. Based on these findings, it is recommended that all the identified socio-economic factors affecting the integration of Almajiris into the formal education system should be addressed by the government. This can be done through public enlightenment campaigns and provision of incentives.
