The major shortcoming of the book is the fact that there is little positive presented about the solutions to the problems facing black (and white) Americans. The careful reader of this bookand of the American scene may begin to wonder whether the authors have a basic mistrust of the federal government and white society that colors their impressions of progressive congressional legislation, Supreme Court decisions, and white attitudes. Some gains have been made in housing, education, voting, employment, justice, and food programs since the late I960's, and these as well as changing views of whites in the South and North need more attention than the brief comment on them in Chapter 9.Overall, however, the book has much to recommend for classes on historical geography, social geography, and urban geography. Outside geography it will appeal to interdisciplinary classes on black Americans or contemporary social issues. It can also be used in classes on research design and writing to illustrate treatments and perceptions of a current social topic.-STANLEY D.
