Robotic friction stir processing (FSP) has not been widely researched to date. This is perhaps due to the limited force capabilities of industrial robots in comparison with dedicated commercial FSP equipment. When operating a FSP machine, the force used to plunge the tools may range from 5000 to 8000 N which is currently beyond the capability of most robots. However, the capacity of robotic manipulators is increasing, so low force friction stir processing is becoming feasible. The ability of the robot arm to apply a controlled force that is normal to a 3-dimensional surface without the need to reorient the workpiece makes it a very useful tool for FSP of complex components. In this analysis, a robot arm with a capacity of 2500 N is used to improve the surface properties of nickel aluminum bronze (NAB) using low force FSP. Multiple passes were applied to the surface of the test sample for a more consistent spread of the stir zone. The sample was then microhardness tested and demonstrated a 62 pct increase in surface hardness. Cavitation erosion testing of the original and processed surfaces was also performed as per ASTM G-32. The erosion rate of the processed NAB sample was 44 pct of the rate experienced by the original cast NAB sample. Finally, the corrosion potentials of FSP NAB were measured at 45 mV less anodic than the unprocessed material, indicating that the processed material is more noble relative to the cast NAB sample. The direct thermal method is used for the creation of globular microstructures suitable for semi-solid metal forming. In this paper both simulation and experimental results using direct thermal method are presented.ProCAST® software was used to estimate temperature distribution inside the aluminium billet. In validation work, molten aluminium A356 was poured into metallic copper tube moulds and cooled down to the semi-solid temperature before being quenched in water at room temperature. The effect of pouring temperatures of 630°C, 650°C, 665°C, 680°C and holding times of 45s and 60s on the microstructure of aluminium A356 alloy were investigated. The simulation results showed that the average temperature rate within the copper mould, from initial pouring temperature to just before quenching, was approximately 1°C/s. Examination of the solidified microstructures showed that the microstructure was more spherical when lower pouring temperatures and holding periods were used. From the micrographs it was found that the most globular and smallest structures were achieved at processing parameters of 630°C and 45s.
This article presents a cascaded three-level voltage source converter (VSC) based STATCOM employing an artificial neuron network (ANN) controller with a new simple circuit of space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) technique. The main aim of utilizing ANN controller and SVPWM technique is to minimize response time (RT) of STATCOM and improve its performance regard to PF amplitude, and total harmonic distortion (THD) of VSC output current during the period of lagging/leading PF loads (inductive/capacitive loads). The performance of STATCOM is tested using MATLAB/SIMULINK in IEEE 3-bus system. The simulation results clearly proved that the STATCOM with intelligent controller is more efficient compared to a conventional controller (PI controller), where ANN enables the voltage and current to be in the same phase rapidly (during 1.5 cycles) with THD less than 5%.
<span>This paper proposes a shunt hybrid power filter (HPF) for harmonic currents and reactive power compensation under a distorted voltage and in a polluted environment. For this purpose, the reference current of the shunt HPF is computed based on the instantaneous reactive power (p-q) theory with self-tuning filter (STF). In order to adjust the dc voltage as a reference value, PI and ANN controllers have been utilized. Moreover, the system has been implemented and simulated in a MATLAB-SIMULINK platform, and selected results are presented. Therefore, the results verified the good dynamic performance, transient stability and strong robustness of the ANN controller. Furthermore, the shunt HAPF with ANN controller has been found to be in agreement with the IEEE 519-1992 standard recommendations on harmonic levels.</span>
Abstract. Stingless bees (kelulut) keeping is now a trend in Malaysia. However, since demand for the source of colony in log is increasing, the log price is rapidly increasing. But, there is no data reported on the economic viability of meliponiculture in the current market price. Thus, the objective of this study is to clarify the economic viability of investment in meliponiculture in the current market price by engineering economic perspective. Investment in meliponiculture was analysed using Equivalent Annual Uniform Cost (EAUC), Internal Rate of Return (IRR) and Breakeven Analysis. A small start-up with 30 units of logs or hives was considered in the analysis. All raw data was acquainted from current Malaysian market price, but only revenue from honey was considered. It was found that EAUC indicated that the annual worth of the log system is 23% better than the hive system. However, IRR calculation indicated that both the log and the hive systems offer margin exceeding 55% which is a very good return in general investment. In addition, it was also found that the log system had breakeven after 8th month, whereas the hive was 13th month. Better economic value could be obtained if revenue from by-products are considered. Thus, it can be concluded that meliponiculture is still very economically viable in Malaysia market trend, and the hive systems could be a better choice if splitting colony, maintenance, safety and aesthetics points of view are considered.
