Background: Imposter phenomenon (IP) is an internal experience of intellectual phoniness that those who feel fraudulence and worthlessness have in spite of outstanding academic or professional accomplishment. It is desirable for Medical students and interns to have high self-esteem and low impostor characteristics in order to become successful medical practitioners. This study was carried out among the medical interns of a tertiary care medical college, to determine the prevalence of Impostor Phenomenon and its association with self-esteem.Methods: The present cross-sectional study was conducted among 150 medical interns. Clance’s impostor phenomenon scale and Rosenberg self-esteem scale were used to assess Impostor characteristics and self-esteem respectively. Data was collected using online survey method.Results: The majority (44.7%) of study participants had moderate IP characteristics, followed by 41.3% with high IP characteristics. Hours of sleep was found to be significantly associated with IP characteristics (p value<0.001). Self-esteem was found to be significantly and inversely correlated with age (r=-0.222), and positively correlated with hours of sleep (r=0.225). Impostor phenomenon and self-esteem were found to be moderately and inversely correlated (r=-0.519).Conclusions: A large number of medical interns were found to have high impostor phenomenon characteristics and low self-esteem. Impostor characteristics were found to be significantly associated with sleep, suggesting a relationship between feelings of fraudulence and skewed sleep patterns. A significant negative correlation between self-esteem and impostor phenomenon suggests that individuals with stronger IP characteristics had lower self-esteem, and vice versa. Low impostor phenomenon characteristics and high self-esteem are favourable for efficient medical practice. Measures to increase level of confidence and self-esteem among medical students and interns should be implemented.
Background: Online video games are one of the most popular recreational activities irrespective of age, gender and culture. Gaming disorder has been recently included in the 11th Revision of the international classification of diseases (ICD-11). Thus online video game addiction among people is a serious mental health issue and unfortunately, research on this addiction is still in its infancy. Thus the present study examines the prevalence of problematic online gaming among undergraduate medical students and its association with demographic variables, and health-related measures like well-being, self-esteem and depressive mood.Methods: The present cross-sectional study was conducted among the undergraduate students of Goa medical college using online survey method. Problematic online gaming was assessed using the problematic online gaming questionnaire short form (POGQ-SF). Additionally, well-being was assessed using the satisfaction with life scale (SWLS), self-esteem was assessed using Rosenberg’s self- esteem scale (RSES) and depressive mood was assessed using the patient health questionnaire (PHQ-9).Results: According to POGQ-SF, 8% of the study participants showed problematic online gaming. It was significantly associated with sex of the study participants, frequency of online gaming, duration of internet use per day and duration of a gaming session.Conclusions: Playing online games is a widespread activity among undergraduate medical students and a substantial proportion of these students exhibit addictive behaviours with regards to online gaming. Further research in terms of longitudinal studies involving larger samples of general population is needed to throw light on causal relationship between problematic online gaming and related factors.
Background: School children form an important target group for a Nation and any ocular morbidity in this age group has huge physical, psychological and socio-economical implications. Research studies have shown that illumination has a significant effect not only on scholastic performance of the students, but also on their physical and mental health. The current study was carried out to assess the prevalence of ocular morbidities among students of high schools of Sanquelim Taluka in Goa, and to assess possible association between ocular morbidity and level of classroom and blackboard illumination. Methods: Students of class 6, 7 and 8 of eight randomly selected schools were interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire for personal details and visual symptoms. Visual acuity testing was done using Snellen’s chart. Classroom and blackboard illumination were assessed separately using standard calibrated digital Lux meter (LX-10101B). Results: Using Snellen’s chart, 83 (18%) of the study subjects were found to have visual morbidity. The measurement of illumination levels showed that out of the 24 classrooms and blackboards evaluated, 15 (62.5%) classrooms and 9 (37.5%) blackboards had inadequate illumination. Classroom illumination was found to have significant association (p=0.04) with visual morbidity. Conclusions: A significant number of classrooms (62.5%) and blackboards (37.5%) had below recommended illumination levels. Regular evaluation of infrastructure should be done to ensure adequate artificial illumination of the classrooms.
Introduction:The danger of using biological warfare for mass destruction is a serious threat to this country. Thus, it is necessary that our health care services are prepared to efficiently manage any such unfortunate events that we may have to face in future. Physicians in the public and private sector of health services are the first point of contact between public and health services. Thus, the present study examines the awareness of medical physicians in Goa about biological terrorism to evaluate the need for further education in this field. Methods:The present cross-sectional study was conducted among the medical physicians in Goa using purposive sampling method. The self-administered questionnaire collected information regarding the qualification, work setting of the study participants and knowledge regarding biological terrorism. Data was entered and analysed using SPSS version 22. Descriptive statistics was utilized to study frequencies and proportion of various study variables.Results: Of the 200 study participants, 128 (64%) were Specialist doctors, 65 (32.5%) were General physicians, while 7 (3.5%) were Super-specialist doctors. Of the 200 study participants, 174 (87%) reported that they were aware of the use of biological agent for mass destruction of human lives. As much as 34 (17%) study participants could not list any agent of bioterrorism. Conclusion:The knowledge of medical physician in Goa regarding bioterrorism is low, which is a matter of concern as these medical professionals are the first point of contact for the patients affected by an attack of bioterrorism.
Background: Mobile Phones can be considered as one of the essential socio-personal utility with diverse features but its overuse may have negative consequences on health. The objective of the present study was to assess the prevalence of mobile phone problematic usage among the medical students and to study the association of health related symptoms and problematic mobile phone usage.Methods: A total of 250 medical students were included in this study. Data regarding the sociodemographic factors and perceived health symptoms related to mobile phone use was collected on a predesigned, structured and self-administered questionnaire. Mobile phone problem use scale (MPPUS) was employed to assess the problematic usage of mobile phone and students were classified into following four categories - casual users (<74), regular users (75-143), at risk users (>143-<179) and problematic users (>179).Results: The total prevalence of problematic users was 22% (17.2% at risk, 4.8% problematic users). Eye strain, concentration difficulties, memory disturbances, morning tiredness, headache, sleep disturbances, painful fingers and restlessness were significantly associated with at risk and problematic users.Conclusions: Multiple health symptoms were associated with problematic use of mobile phones among the medical students. MPPUS is a useful tool which can be used to identify problematic usage of mobile phones.
