Brain tumor is a debilitating condition and is one of the leading causes of cancer -related deaths in the world today.Depending on the direction in which the tumor is spreading, the brain tumor is classified into various categories and the course of action for its treatment is chosen. This paper presents a novel approach to monitor the direction and amount of brain tumor propagation. This is achieved in multiple stages comprising of a) segmenting the MR images using bit plane slicing method, b) reconstructing using Principal Component Analysis; and c) finding the tumor and non-tumor ratio using 2by2 neighborhood method which can also be used to monitor the efficacy of radiotherapy and chemotherapy sessions. Finally an innovative quadrant method is developed to find the direction in which the tumor is spreading. This approach helps to classify the type of brain tumor and thereby help radiologists to plan the sessions efficiently.
