Assessment and technology are two components that are very important in education. Assessment is the core of education which provides teachers lots information from their students and technology helps to achieve the learning goal more easily. Teachers are able to take the advantages of the integration of technology and assessment to get really detail information of students test to create a good teaching process. However, there are not many teachers who really consider about assessment and the washback effect on students’ learning. Thus, this study aimed to know the washback effect of Quizizz assessment platform on students’ learning. To investigate the issue, the researcher used questionnaire, observation and in-depth interview. The data which obtained would be analyzed qualitatively. The result of the study shows that students were motivated and they wanted to learn more after doing several gamified test with Quizizz. They were interested in elements of game such as Leaderboard, Meme, Time restriction, and Test report. Keywords: Assessment, Technology, Gamified test, Elements of game, Washback effect.
This research is focused on the use of Powton as a digital medium to improve the students’ pronunciation in speaking class. The researcher applies a classroom action research which consisting of two cycles with three meetings in every cycle. Collections of quantitative and qualitative data are gained from test, observation, questionnaire, interview, and diary. The quantitative data obtained from the test is analyzed in order to find out the mean score. Furthernore, the qualitative data are analyzed by: assembling the data, coding the data, comparing the data, building interpretations, and reporting the outcomes. The result of the research shows that Powtoon as a digital medium could improve: (1) the students’ pronunciation in speaking class; and (2) the students’ learning motivation. Hence, the findings reveal that improving the students’ pronunciation in speaking using Powtoon was successful viewed from some dimensions. The implementation of using Powtoon improved the teaching and learning process in speaking. The motivation, attention, interest and participation of the students improved. Therefore, it is recommended for teachers to use Powtoon in teaching speaking especially when they want to improve students’ pronunciation and to improve students’ motivation in the speaking class.
In the industrial era 4.0, the use of digital comic as a multimodal teaching medium is seen as the new trend in EFL classrooms. Although many teachers had already used this medium, so far, there was not any study which inquires the use of comic in another setting such as vocational high schools. Considering this gap, this study aimed to explore teacher belief, practice, and problems in implementing digital comics to teach writing for vocational students. This study used a qualitative case study approach. The subject was an experienced English teacher who held M. A. in English language. As the findings, the teacher believed that the implementation of comics-manga was the best method to switch the vocational students’ stereotype on English; from English as the most difficult subject to English as the enjoyable subject. This medium was implemented by using the genre approach. However, as the consequence, the combination of digital comics and process approach confronted a major challenge, namely time management.
The research aims to describe the application of authentic assessment for writing skill in English learning process. Authentic assessment is a form of assessment that requires students to demonstrate the competence of attitude, knowledge and skill gained from the learning process that linked to the real-world context. The research was conducted at senior high school in Indonesia. It is a qualitative research in the form of qualitative descriptive approach. The subjects of the study were the English teacher and the students of grade eleventh. The data were taken from observation, interview, and documentation. The findings show that the teacher has been implemented authentic assessment for writing skill. The teacher used several techniques and instruments in applying authentic assessment for students writing skill: (a) attitude assessment (observation and journal), (b) knowledge assessment (written test and assignment), (c) skills assessment (project and product assessment). But in its application, teacher still found some various problems. They were time limitation of learning and complexity of assessment procedures. Nevertheless, teacher made several efforts to overcome the problems.
This paper aimed to investigate the implementation of inquiry-based learning (IBL) in English teaching at candidate school of International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP) in Surakarta and explore the benefits of its implementation in English teaching. Three English teachers at a candidate school of IB PYP in Surakarta participated in this study and they were chosen purposively. This research employed a qualitative approach and emphasized on a case study. The techniques for collecting data comprised in-depth interview and observation. The collected data were analyzed by the researchers through Constant Comparative Method (CCM). The results revealed that the implementation of inquiry-based learning in English teaching in this school used Bruce and Davidson's view and some features of IBL. That cycles involved asking, investigating, creating, discussing and reflecting. And the benefits of this method in English teaching based on IB PYP were 1) the teachers can create meaningful activities for the students, 2) teaching and learning were student-centered, 3) the students learn through language and get endurable understanding, and 4) it promotes students ’skills and attitude at teamwork.
