Sediment cores were collected from two sites in Grand Traverse Bay, Lake Michigan in May 1998, dated using 210Pb geochronology, and analyzed for polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and toxaphene. The extraordinarily high sediment focusing and accumulation rates in these cores relative to other Great Lakes sediments allowed quantification of high-resolution temporal trends in the burial of hydrophobic organic contaminants. The focus-corrected accumulation rate of total PCBs (sum of 105 congeners) in 1998 was 0.50 ng/cm2-year at both sites. Toxaphene and total PAH (t-PAH; sum of 33 compounds) surficial accumulations varied at each site and ranged from 0.08 to 0.41 ng/cm2-year for toxaphene and 25 to 52 ng/cm2-yr for t-PAHs at the two sites. The maximum t-PAH accumulation rate was in sediment dated from 1942, and PAH accumulation decreased from 1942 to 1980 with a first-order rate of decline 0.017 yr(-1). Both toxaphene and t-PCB accumulations peaked in sediment deposited in 1972, afterwhich their accumulations decreased with nearly identical rates of decline (0.027 yr(-1) and 0.028 yr(-1), respectively).

This study evaluated the new online Emotional Attachment and Emotional Availability (EA2) Intervention for use with adoptive families in enhancing parent-child EA, parental perceptions of EA, child attachment behaviors, parent-child emotional attachment, and reducing parent-reported child behavioral problems and parenting-related stress. Participants in this study were adoptive parents and their adopted children ages 1.5 to 5 years old (N = 15 dyads). Participants were placed in an immediate intervention group (IG) or a delayed intervention group (DG) that would receive the 6-week EA2 Tele-Intervention after the IG. Results revealed significant differences in the IG in child behavioral problems, parent-child EA, parental perceptions of EA, and parent-child emotional attachment, improvements not seen in the DG. Analysis of effects of the DG after receiving the EA2 Tele-Intervention revealed significant differences over time also in most of these qualities.

Three shear turbulence resuspension mesocosms (STORM tanks) were used to examine the release of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from resuspended Hudson River sediment. Twenty-two percent of the resuspended PCBs desorbed after 2 h, and 35% +/- 8% of PCBs were in the dissolved phase after apparent steady state was reached in 2 days. After the first resuspension event, the solids were allowed to settle and the quiescent time was varied to determine whether the labile pool of PCBs is recharged during sediment consolidation. The steady-state log Koc values for the third subsequent resuspension were higher than for the first event due to lower dissolved PCB concentrations; the particulate PCB concentrations were constant between events. With 1 day of consolidation between resuspension events, the dissolved concentration of all congeners decreased an average of 8% +/- 5% between subsequent resuspension events. With 4 days between events, only the dissolved pentachlorinated PCBs decreased significantly (p = 0.002), suggesting that the easily desorbable PCBs recharge when there is sufficient time between resuspension events.

To evaluate the influence of episodic events on particle and hydrophobic organic contaminant (HOC) cycling in the Great Lakes, we deployed sequencing sediment traps at two locations in the western arm of Grand Traverse Bay, Lake Michigan. The traps collected integrated samples of settling particles every 2 weeks from May 1997 to September 1999. The total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (t-PAH) and total polychlorinated biphenyl (t-PCB) settling fluxes from the surface waters in the southern site were significantly greater than those from the northern site. In addition, there were more frequent brief increases in the mass flux to the southern site than to the northern site. These episodic events, which occurred only 20% of the time, accounted for 65% of both the mass flux and t-PAH flux. The t-PCB flux was not influenced by these episodic events, and only 18% of the t-PCB flux occurred during these events. PAHs and PCBs appear to be tracing different types of particles in the water column. Several large mass flux events characteristic of seiches were observed simultaneously in the benthic nepheloid layer (BNL) at both the northern and the southern sites. The particles settling as a result of these resuspension events had lower t-PCB and t-PAH concentrations than particles settling at other times. This suggests that the material settling into the traps on the high mass flux days is composed of a mixture of the less contaminated underlying resuspended sediment and the "regular" contaminant-rich particles settling into the BNL.
