To test the effect of sediment resuspension on the nutrient and ecosystem dynamics we performed a 4 wk experiment in three 1000 l shear-turbulence-resuspension-mesocosm (STURM) resuspension (R) tanks and three 1000 l non-resuspension (NR) tanks. All tanks contained defaunated muddy sediment and brackish estuarine water and had similar water-column turbulence intensities (~1 cm s-1), energy dissipation rates (~0.08 cm 2 s-3), and tidal cycles (4 h mixing-on and 2 h mixing-off). However, while bottom shear velocity (stress) was low in the NR tanks, high instantaneous bottom shear produced resuspension in the R tanks during the mixing-on cycles. Tidal resuspension in the R tanks resulted in concentrations of 120 to 220 mg l-1 total suspended solids when mixing was on, decreasing to between 10 and 20 mg l-1 when mixing was off. Particulate nitrogen, phosphorus, and carbon concentrations, as well as dissolved inorganic nitrogen, nitrate + nitrite, and phosphate levels were higher in the R tanks. Phytoplankton biomass was also higher in the R tanks, though light was limiting. Tidal resuspension affected water-column algal and zooplankton community composition and induced significantly higher concentrations of brown tide Aureococcus anophagefferens. Microphytobenthos biomass was significantly higher in the NR tanks. Dissolved inorganic nitrogen sediment effluxes were similar in both tanks; however, polychaetes and amphipods developed in the NR, but not in the R tank sediments. Tidal resuspension shifted processes from the benthos to the water column. Regular tidal resuspension profoundly affected ecosystem structure and function, often through indirect pathways and linkages. In the years 2010-2013, 528 samples of surface sediments were collected from lake depths in the area of Poland. The content of 7 PCB congeners, HCH isomers and p,p’-DDT, p,p’-DDE and p,p’-DDD was determined using the GC-ECD method. The studies showed the common occurrence of organochlorine compounds in lake sediments in Poland. The presence of HCHs, at a concentration above the determination limit, was detected in 83.71% of samples, that of DDTs in 98.86% of samples, and of PCBs in 98.86% of samples. The maximum HCH concentration was 60.7 ng g-1, that of DDTs 602.9 ng g-1, and of PCBs 50.7 ng g-1, while the averages were 6.3 ng g-1, 19.2 ng g-1 and 2.8 ng g-1, respectively. High levels of DDTs are found in sediments of those lakes upon which major towns are located, whereas the highest HCH concentrations are observed in sediments of the lakes upon which holiday centres and agrotourism facilities have developed. The ratio of concentrations of total DDT metabolites to p,p’-DDT was above 2 in almost all samples, and the value was most frequently from several to tens (average 28.3). Sediments of some lakes contain higher concentrations of γ-HCH and DDT metabolites than their PEC values, the content of γ-HCH was higher in 1.89% of the analysed samples, the content of p,p’-DDE in 3.78% of the samples, and the content of p,p’-DDD in 7.38% of the samples. Concentrations of p,p’-DDT and PCB in excess of the PEC value were not found in any of the samples tested.

Intermittent riverine resuspension (IRR), a common phenomenon, was applied to investigate its effects on sedimentary resources availability and bacteria in the water column. This lab experiment used organic-rich lowland river sediment in a newly designed erosion chamber, the Benthic Water Column Simulator, generating well-defined ratios of shear velocity u* to turbulence intensity. Eight consecutive resuspension events, 1-8, were initiated at u* 5 1.1 cm s 21 . Sedimentary and phosphorus entrainment decreased from 20.4 g m 22 h 21 and 111.6 mg m 22 h 21 at event 1 to 1.31 g m 22 h 21 and 18.7 mg m 22 h 21 at event 8, suggesting an exhaustion of particulate and dissolved sediment constituents. Entrainment of particle-associated (PA) bacteria (132.7 3 10 9 -251.1 3 10 9 cells m 22 h 21 ) was strongly correlated to that of particles. Free-living (FL) bacteria (227.6 3 10 9 -36.4 3 10 9 cells m 22 h 21 ) were fractionally entrained. Numbers of PA bacteria remained low after each event, whereas those of FL bacteria strongly increased 5-15 h after an event because of growth due to increased availability of dissolved organic carbon and inorganic nutrients following each event. FL bacteria community structure also changed during IRR. The systematic changes over consecutive IRR cycles show a strong effect in all considered parameters that elude the typical single-event, steady-state experiments. IRR should thus be considered in two respects: experimental protocols on riverine water quality should be revised. In ecosystem modeling, IRR should be considered to better predict extent and effect of resuspension. Only IRR adequately reflects the natural interplay between hydrodynamics and organisms in rivers.
