Polychlorinated Biphenyl Release from Resuspended Hudson River Sediment

Abstract: Three shear turbulence resuspension mesocosms (STORM tanks) were used to examine the release of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from resuspended Hudson River sediment. Twenty-two percent of the resuspended PCBs desorbed after 2 h, and 35% +/- 8% of PCBs were in the dissolved phase after apparent steady state was reached in 2 days. After the first resuspension event, the solids were allowed to settle and the quiescent time was varied to determine whether the labile pool of PCBs is recharged during sediment con… Show more

“…We used 2 sets of triplicate cylindrical tanks, the shear-turbulence-resuspension-mesocosm (STURM) resuspension tanks (Schneider et al 2007, who use the designation STORM tanks), and standard non-resuspension MEERC tanks (termed 'C tanks' in Crawford & Sanford 2001). The R tanks had a single paddle (Fig.…”

“…These include organochlorine compounds such as DDTs, HCHs and PCBs. A re-suspension of contaminated sediments can be an important source of organochlorine compounds in the water and can cause exposure of fish to their effects (Hornbuckle and Miller 2010;Schneider et al 2007). For these reasons, water sediment pollution is one of the most important contemporary environmental problems.…”

“…The applicability of such approaches is questionable since either natural hydrodynamics and/or resuspension-associated concomitant benthic nutrient supply to the bacterial community are not appropriately simulated. Our approach, like a few others (Porter et al 2004;Schneider et al 2007;Kleeberg et al 2010), considers well-defined hydrodynamics. The BWCS (Fig.…”

“…Resuspension experiments with realistic, well-controlled hydrodynamic conditions have been performed first only for marine systems by an annular flume (Wainright 1990) and later in tidal-influenced freshwater by shear-turbulence-resuspension-mesocosms (STURM) tanks (Schneider et al 2007) and brackish estuarine water by shear turbulence resuspension mesocosms (STORM) tanks (Porter et al 2010). In the mid 1980s, the magnitude of fluxes of microorganisms from a marine sediment into the water column has been directly studied at defined wall shear stress (Wainright 1990).…”
