Graduate education for rehabilitation counselors should now go beyond discipline-based expertise to the point of preparing global leaders in rehabilitation. The world is becoming increasingly small due to technology, as we rapidly approach the reality of that proverbial global village. Rehabilitation counselors can expand their base of influence, and thus, importance by functioning in a global context. To accomplish this, it is necessary to go beyond the typical preparation of rehabilitation counselors to integrate seven new skills into graduate rehabilitation counselor education. The skills are intercultural competency, anticipating the future, making organizations learning entities, using a comprehensive framework for planning change, data-driven decision making, critical thinking, and transformational leadership. An overview of each of these skills is provided along with strategies for infusing the skills immediately into Council on Rehabilitation Education-accredited graduate rehabilitation programs. There is also value in mainstreaming the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework and including training in developing social capital as additional complementary elements in preparing global leaders in rehabilitation.
Internet-Connected Assistive Devices (iCAD), like accessible smartphones, tablets, computers, and apps, have become an integral part of everyday functioning for people with disabilities (PWD). The objective of this article was to identify self-report assessments having the relevance and clinical applicability for assessing satisfaction with performing Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) for PWD using iCAD. An exploratory review was conducted to identify self-report assessments that were appropriate, practical, clinically fit, and psychometrically acceptable, for assessing satisfaction with performing IADLs for PWD using iCAD. Thirty-two IADL assessments were identified, of which six met inclusion criteria. Four of six assessments did not specifically address iCAD usage, while two assessments had limited relevance and clinical applicability, for assessing satisfaction with performing IADLs for PWD using iCAD. This review establishes the growing need for a self-report IADL assessment that has been specifically designed and validated for assessing satisfaction with performing IADLs for PWD using iCAD
Given the barriers to accessing health care that are especially relevant for the elderly and people with disabilities, it makes sense that telerehabilitation (TR) would be a modality of service delivery that will be increasingly utilized in the future. To date, its popularity and usage is growing. In order for this service delivery modality to reach its full potential, it will need a stronger evidence base that demonstrates its clinical effectiveness. This discussion addresses the current limitations of the research on TR. Further, it offers guidance on steps that can be taken to begin improving the evidence base of TR. TR has promise as a future clinical service delivery modality in rehabilitation counseling.
