A. Probleme der Ligninchemie Das Lignin wird bekanntlich in seiner Grundstruktur als ein aromatischer Körper angesprochen. Alle oxydativen Abbaureaktionen führen zu einfachen Phenolen wie z.B. Vanillin, Vanillinsäure, Aceto-Vanillon, S yringa-Aldehyd usw.Der Chemiker, der sich mit den Möglichkeiten einer technischen Verwertung des Lignins befassen muß, steht jedoch vor dem Problem, daß diese Substanz in ihren isolierten, d. h. technisch zugänglichen Formen, phenolische Reaktionen nur in sehr schwachem Maße zeigt. Überhaupt ist der Charakter einer aromatischen Verbindung kaum deutlich. Insbesondere gilt dies für das Lignin der Sulfitablauge, das wir als Ligninsulfosäure zu bezeichnen pflegen.Die Reaktion der schwefligen Säure mit dem Lignin unter den Bedingungen des sauren Sulfitaufschlusses ist im einzelnen noch nicht geklärt. In Analogie zu der Umsetzung der sog. Erdtmanschen Säure (I) nimmt man an, daß sich die schweflige Säure unter Aufspaltung eines Ätherringes an die Propan-Seitenkette (II) anlagert (1). OCH 3Sicher ist, daß sich beim Sulfitaufschluß des Holzes eine echte, d. h. kernsubstituierte Phenolsulfosäure des Lignins nicht bildet.Ebenso negativ verläuft -von diesem Gesichtspunkt aus betrachtet -die Reaktion des Holzes mit konzentrierter Schwefelsäure, oder der Versuch, isoliertes Lignin zu sulfonieren. Kernsubstitutionen am Pbenylpropan finden nicht statt. Ähnlich verhält sich Holz oder isoliertes Lignin bei der Nitrierung. Bisher gelang es nicht, Nitrolignine über die entsprechenden Aminokörper und deren Diazoniumsalze in Azofarb-stofFe zu überführen.Eine Erklärung für dieses negative Verhalten könnte -zunächst auf das Holz selbst bezogendamit gegeben werden, daß einer jeden Kernsubstitution durch die -SO 3 H-bzw. -NO 2 -Gruppe eine Abbaureaktion des genuinen Ligningerüstes, vielleicht verbunden mit einer Lostrennung von den Kohlenhydraten der Zellmembran, vorausgeht, und daß anschließend eine spontan einsetzende "Rekondensation des Ligninkörpers in sich" vor der Substitution den Vorzug hat. Der Naturstoff verwandelt sich so in ein Sekundärgebilde (III)* mit mindestens 4-fach "intermolekular-substituierten" Benzolringen (2). Es ist sehr zweifelhaft, ob eine solche starke Vernetzung auch für das genuine Lignin angenommen werden darf.
Bei versuchen, in sauren Holzhydrolysaten Ascorbinsäure nachzuweisen, wurde die Reduktinsäure gefunden. Bei Vergleichen zwischen dem Pentosan‐ bzw. Uronsäuregehalt verschiedener Holz‐ und Pflanzenmaterialien und der aus ihnen gewinnbaren Reduktinsäuremenge wird kein genügender Zusammenhang gefunden.
