By developing the concepts of strength of incoherence and discontinuity measure, we show that a distinct quantitative characterization of chimera and multichimera states which occur in networks of coupled nonlinear dynamical systems admitting nonlocal interactions of finite radius can be made. These measures also clearly distinguish between chimera/multichimera states (both stable and breathing types) and coherent and incoherent as well as cluster states. The measures provide a straight forward and precise characterization of the various dynamical states in coupled chaotic dynamical systems irrespective of the complexity of the underlying attractors.

In this paper, the nonlinear dynamics of certain damped and forced versions of velocity-dependent potential systems, namely, ͑i͒ the motion of a particle on a rotating parabola and ͑ii͒ a nonlinear harmonic oscillator, is considered. Various bifurcations such as symmetry breaking, period doubling, intermittency, crises, and antimonotonicity are reported. We also investigate the transition from two-frequency quasiperiodicity to chaotic behavior in a model for the quasiperiodically driven rotating parabola system. As the driving parameter is increased, the route to chaos takes place in four distinct stages. The first stage is a torus doubling bifurcation. The second stage is a merging of doubled torus. The third stage is a transition from the merged torus to a strange nonchaotic attractor. Different mechanisms for the creation of strange nonchaotic attractors (SNAs) are studied in a two-frequency parametrically driven Duffing oscillator. We focus on intermittency transitions in particular, and show that SNAs in this system are created through quasiperiodic saddle-node bifurcations (type-I intermittency) as well as through a quasiperiodic subharmonic bifurcation (type-III intermittency). The intermittent attractors are characterized via a number of Lyapunov measures including the behavior of the largest nontrivial Lyapunov exponent and its variance, as well as through distributions of finite-time Lyapunov exponents. These attractors are ubiquitous in quasiperiodically driven systems; the regions of occurrence of various SNAs are identified in a phase diagram of the Duffing system.

We show that the recently introduced 0-1 test can successfully distinguish between strange nonchaotic attractors (SNAs) and periodic/quasiperiodic/chaotic attractors, by suitably choosing the arbitrary parameter associated with the translation variables in terms of the golden mean number which avoids resonance with the quasiperiodic force. We further characterize the transition from quasiperiodic to chaotic motion via SNAs in terms of the 0-1 test. We demonstrate that the test helps to detect different dynamical transitions to SNAs from quasiperiodic attractor or the transitions from SNAs to chaos. We illustrate the performance of the 0-1 test in detecting transitions to SNAs in quasiperiodically forced logistic map, cubic map, and Duffing oscillator.

We identify the mechanism behind the existence of intensity induced chimera states in globally coupled oscillators. We find that the effect of intensity in the system is to cause multistability by increasing the number of fixed points. This in turn increases the number of multistable attractors and we find that their stability is determined by the strength of coupling . This causes the coexistence of different collective states in the system depending upon the initial state. We demonstrate that intensity induced chimera is generic to both periodic and chaotic systems. We have discussed possible applications of our results to real world systems like the brain and spin torque nano oscillators.

In this paper, we present the hyperchaos dynamics of a modified canonical Chua's electrical circuit. This circuit, which is capable of realizing the behavior of every member of the Chua's family, consists of just five linear elements (resistors, inductors and capacitors), a negative conductor and a piecewise linear resistor. The route followed is a transition from regular behavior to chaos and then to hyperchaos through border-collision bifurcation, as the system parameter is varied. The hyperchaos dynamics, characterized by two positive Lyapunov exponents, is described by a set of four coupled first-order ordinary differential equations. This has been investigated extensively using laboratory experiments, Pspice simulation and numerical analysis.

A simple quasiperiodically forced one-dimensional cubic map is shown to exhibit very many types of routes to chaos via strange nonchaotic attractors (SNAs) with reference to a two-parameter (A−f ) space. The routes include transitions to chaos via SNAs from both one frequency torus and period doubled torus. In the former case, we identify the fractalization and type I intermittency routes. In the latter case, we point out that atleast four distinct routes through which the truncation of torus doubling bifurcation and the birth of SNAs take place in this model. In particular, the formation of SNAs through Heagy-Hammel, fractalization and type-III intermittent mechanisms are described. In addition, it has been found that in this system there are some regions in the parameter space where a novel dynamics involving a sudden expansion of the attractor which tames the growth of period-doubling bifurcation takes place, giving birth to SNA. The SNAs created through different mechanisms are characterized by the behaviour of the Lyapunov exponents and their variance, by the estimation of phase sensitivity exponent as well as through the distribution of finite-time Lyapunov exponents.
