SUMMARYThree sector elements, two for plane stress problems (PSL and PSN) and one for plate bending problems (BSN), have been developed. Of the three elements, two are based on the natural mode technique. The elements have been applied to typical problems to test their performance.
Vibration reduction possibilities in laminated composites with one of the plies as actuation layer, have been investigated. Magnetostrictive and Piezoelectric actuation have been considered. A comparative assessment of the vibration suppression performance of piezoelectric and magnetostrictive actuation in laminated composite beam has been presented. Variation of closed loop frequencies and damping coefficients with respect to the changes in ply lay-up, active layer position and controller gain have been studied. A smart composite finite element for laminated beam analysis has been developed. Numerical results have been presented in typical cases, to indicate performance of the finite elements developed and also to indicate the variation of vibration reduction times with various geometric and control parameters. 158 SPIE Voi. 3321 • 0277-786X198/$1 0.00 Downloaded From: http://proceedings.spiedigitallibrary.org/ on 06/20/2016 Terms of Use: http://spiedigitallibrary.org/ss/TermsOfUse.aspx
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
