General information is given on the Coleoptera collection of the Museum fur Naturkunde in Berlin (MNHUB) comprising six million specimens and its "Historical Collection" very rich in types. The Ciidae (= Cisidae, = Cioidae) collection of the MNHUB is newly arranged. Data on supraspecific taxa and all represented nominal taxa of the species group and general information on type specimens (number and status) are electronically captured in an Access data base which is the basis of this paper. An alphabetical type catalogue, an alphabetical list of historically important specimens, and a table of represented genera, species, types and specimens are presented. The Ciidae collection consists of 8,166 specimens (4,410 identified and 3,756 unidentified). It comprises 118 nominal taxa of the species group which are placed in 14 genera. The world fauna of Ciidae consists of 567 species (Abdullah 1973). thus 20 per cent of the Ciidae species are represented in the MNHUB collection. 115 nominal taxa of the species group are valid and one (Dermestes picipes Fabricius, 1787, nec Herbst) is a synonym of Cis boleti Scopoli according to the catalogues of von Dalla Torre (1911), Abdullah (1973) and . Types of two further taxa (Dermestes fimeturius Herbst, 1783, and Cuteretes castuneus Herbst, 1793) are represented, but the status of these species must be verified in a systematic revision. 73 type specimens of 30 Ciidae taxa of the species group are deposited in the collection (4 holotypes, 69 syntypes), thus almost 24 per cent of the species are represented by types. The 30 species which are represented by type material have been described by Reitter (seven species), Schilsky (four species), Fabricius (three species), Fauvel (three species), Gyllenhal (two species), Herbst (two species), and Mannerheim (two species). Ancey, Dufour, Gerstaecker, Klug, MelliC, Panzer, and Perkins described one species each. The Pterogeniidae collection comprises one species with four non-typical specimens only. The world fauna of Pterogeniidae consists of 24 described species (Burckhardt & Lob1 1992), thus only four per cent of the Pterogeniidae species are represented in the MNHUB collection. This family was formerly included in the family Ciidae.
