20 virus types and subtypes belonging to several viral groups and their respective antisera were tested by counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIEP). Group-, type- and/or subtype-specific precipitation lines were formed provided the viral antigens and antisera were sufficiently concentrated and potent. Although the CIEP test itself is more rapid (less than 3 h) and simple than other commonly used tests for virus identification, such as complement fixation, it requires concentration of the antigen to a considerable degree, especially in the case of viruses with little antigenic mass (e.g. polioviruses).
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
