The lecanine scale, Didesmococcus unifasciatus (Arch.) was recently found in two widely‐separated orchards in Lebanon. Its biology was studied locally. The scale is bisexual and univoltine. Young adults of both sexes appear and mate during the last week of April. Fertilized females double their size between the end of April when copulation occurs and the oviposition period in mid‐June. A female lays between 1500 and 2400 eggs in three to five days under its scale, and egg hatching occurs some four to five days later. The scale passes through three larval instars. Winter is passed in the second larval instar. D. uni‐fasciatus does not seem to have a true diapause period in Lebanon. This scale has a large number of natural enemies that keep it under control. Where contact insecticides are regularly used, a great reduction in populations of its natural enemies occurs, and infestation by this scale results in the death of almond trees within a period of three to five years after the start of an infestation. Zusammenfassung Zur Kenntnis der Mandelschädlinge des Mittelmeergebietes. II. Didesmococcus unifasciatus (Arch.)
A view is given on observations made from 1976 till 1985 in some Arabian date palms groves on the interrelationships between the management and the arthropods injurious to the palms. There are often pests problems due to faulty management. Some species of arthropods are taken out as examples. The dangerousness of these pests can be substantially reduced by a better management, particularly using other control means than the conventional organic pesticides, as anti-feedants against Oryctes adults, and microbial pesticides against their grubs, -a combination of sex pheromones and chemosterilants against adults of the Lesser and Greater date fruit moths, -chemosterilants against the tetranychid mite, Oligonychusand other possible selective means of control.
The biology of five species of borers that attack almond trees in the East Mediterranean is presented. Capnodis tenebrionis L. and C. carbonaria Kl. are two Buprestids commonly found in stone fruit orchards, specially in almond trees. The life cycle requires 12 to 15 months to be completed. Cerambyx dux Fald. is living in the wood of all species of stone fruit trees. Its attacks are directed against weak but not dead trees. The completion of a life‐cycle of this species requires two years. Ruguloscolytus amygdali Guer. and R. mediterraneus Egg. belonging to family Scolytidae attack weak or damaged trees of the genus Prunus and particularly almond. Newly emerged adults feed by boring short tunnels in front of a bud. The gallery bored by the gravid female is some 10 to 20 mm long. Each of the two species completes three generations per year in the costal area of Lebanon. Zusammenfassung Zur Kenntnis der Mandelschädlinge im Mittleren Osten. III.
The above‐named species are until now the only ones reported to feed on almond fruits in the East Mediterranean countries. Larvae of Eurytoma amygdali are more commonly found in fruits of soft‐shelled, or late‐flowering varieties, and fruits of bitter varieties do not seem to sustain attacks by this pest. The economic importance of Eurytoma as a pest of almond culture necessitates yearly chemical control, and this pest causes much more serious damage than the multivoltine Anarsia lineatella. Larvae of Anarsia develop in the fruit mesocarp, without ever entering the endocarp to reach the “nut”, or seed; for this reason, the feeding of this species does not cause significant economic damage to almond culture.
