Synthesis of Methyl(para-methoxyphenyl)glycidate and Some Unusual Reactions Encountered on the Way.-The title glycidate (III), the crucial chiral intermediate for the synthesis of the antihypertensive drug diltiazem (I), is prepared by a one-pot process. Sulfonation of the diol (II) with various sulfonyl chlorides such as (IV) affords ene-sulfonates (V) and α-sulfonates (VI) in ratios depending on the bulk of the sulfonyl chloride and on the concentration. The attempted conversion of the . alpha.-sulfonate (VIa) into compound (III) by treatment with NEt3/MeOH or NaOMe/CHCl3 results in the formation of (Va).-(RAO, A. V. R.; GAITONDE, A.; RAO, S.
