Haemangiomas of the maxillary sinus are very rare. In this paper we present one case with an inaccurate preoperative diagnosis which was treated by entire excision of the tumour. One year aftersurgery there is no evidence of recurrence. The literature on the topic is reviewed.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare condition which usuallyaffects the trunk, perineum and limbs. Head and neck involvement is very uncommon and in most cases it is secondary to orbital or dental infection. We report a case of craniofacial necrotizing fasciitis (CNF) secondary to a maxillary sinusitis. The patient was treated intensively with antibiotics, surgical procedures and life-support measures.Despite all efforts, the patient died one week after admission. This case highlights early diagnosis and aggressive management as decisivefactors for the outcome of the patient.

Introduction Radial probe endobronchial ultrasound (RP‐EBUS) is a modern technique for diagnosis of peripheral lung lesions. It is assumed that the addition of transbronchial cryobiopsy (TBCB) could increase the diagnostic value for RP‐EBUS. Objectives The main objectives were to evaluate the efficacy and safety of RP‐EBUS‐guided TBCB for diagnosis of peripheral lung lesions and comparing it with RP‐EBUS‐guided transbronchial forceps biopsy. Methods Sixty patients with peripheral lung diseases were divided into two groups. Group I included 45 patients who were eligible for TBCB and they subjected to forceps transbronchial biopsy (forceps TBB) and TBCB guided by RP‐EBUS. Fifteen patients who were not eligible for TBCB were included in group II and they were subjected to forceps TBB and/or cytology retrieval procedures guided by RP‐EBUS. Results In group I, forceps TBB had sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and accuracy of; 67.5%, 100%, 100%, 18.8%, and 69.8%, respectively, while TBCB had sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, and accuracy of 75%, 100%, 100%, 23.1%, and 76.7%, respectively. The sensitivity in group II was 80% and the overall results including both groups were sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, and accuracy of 85.2%, 100%, 100%, 42.8%, and 86.7%, respectively. Regarding the complications, only one patient (1.7%) had significant bleeding. One patient (1.7%) had pneumothorax and another patient (1.7%) suffered from hypoxemia. Conclusions RP‐EBUS‐guided TBCB is a safe and effective technique for diagnosis of peripheral lung lesions. TBCB has achieved higher diagnostic values and better quality of samples.

The aim of this study was to determine the following: (a) asbestos body count in lung tissue of different western Mediterranean populations; (b) the association, if any, of urban industrial residence with higher lung tissue asbestos exposure posed for lung cancer in our population. Lung-tissue samples were studied in three groups of subjects from the general population: (1) group A comprised 18 patients from Barcelona's urban industrial area (mean age = 62.2 y, standard deviation [SD] = 13.6); (2) group B comprised 16 patients who lived in a rural area of Albacete in the south of Spain (mean age = 62.2 y, SD = 13.7); and (3) group C comprised 8 patients who had been diagnosed with lung cancer, who lived in or near Barcelona, and who had never been exposed occupationally to asbestos (mean age = 62.1 y, SD = 7.4). A wet lung/dry lung weight ratio was determined. In group A, asbestos bodies were observed in 9 of 18 (50%) subjects, and asbestos bodies numbered 52.35 per g dry lung (SD = 101.72) (upper limit of normality [higher value] = 430.12 asbestos bodies per g dry lung). In group B, asbestos bodies were observed in 2 of 16 (12.5%) subjects, and asbestos bodies numbered 5.37 per g dry lung (SD = 8.79) (upper limit normality = 35.15 asbestos bodies per g dry lung). In group C, we observed asbestos bodies in 2 of 8 subjects (25.0%), and asbestos bodies numbered 20.59 per g dry weight (SD = 24.10).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
