The experiments were conducted to study the efficiency of methyl eugenol in suppressing the fruit fly, Dacus zonatus (Saunders), population from a guava orchard of 25 acres. It was observed that the traps baited with lure/toxicant mixture of 85 % methyl eugenol + 10 YO sugar + 5 % naled, when suspended from guava trees, successfully suppressed the fly population to sub-economic level from 1977 through 1979. The maximum fly population recorded in experimental orchard averaged 12.1 flies/trap/day where as in control orchard the highest average number of flies per trap per day was 1108.3. It was also found that the experimental orchard had low fruit infestation than check.
Investigations were made on rearing, reproductive behaviour and gamma sterilization of one‐day old male adults of Dacus zonatus. The larvae were successfully reared on an artificial diet based on wheat shorts. Adult emergence ranged from 89–99% with a sex ratio of about 1:1. Mating occurred at dusk and its duration ranged from 8–13 hours. Males mated a second time with the same female but preferred mating if the already mated female was replaced with a sexually mature virgin female. The optimum dosage for inducing sterility amongst one‐day old male adults was 12 kR.
Mature (5-to 6-day-old) male and female pupae of C. partellus were irradiated at 5 to 20 kilo-Roentgen (kR) and 5 to 10 kR respectively. Emergence of normal appearing moths, pupal periods and adult longevities remained statistically unaffected. Fecundity of normal (nonirradiated) females mated with males irradiated as pupae was nonsignificantly different from control, but fecundity of females irradiated as pupae at 10 kR was significantly reduced when they were mated with normal mates. Dominant lethals of varying intensities were induced at 5-20 kR. However, induction of dominant lethality was sex-as well as dosedependent. Radiation doses inducing 100% dominant lethals in sperm (20 kR) and ova (5 kR) did not mitigate the mating ability of males and receptivity of females. However, receptivity of females was reduced significantly when they were Irradiated as pupae at 10 kR. Rates of embryonation in F, eggs were significantly reduced when normal females were crossed with males irradiated as pupae at 20 kR, but similar effect was observed at 10 kR in reversed crosses. Embryonic development was delayed in eggs obtained from crosses, where male or female parent was irradiated In pupal stage, but in both cases most of the dominant lethals acted late in embryonic development.
Delta traps baited with gossyplure (a 50:50 mixture of Cis, Cis and Cis, trans isomers of 7,11‐hexadecadienyl acetate) as sex attractant were used to study the seasonal population fluctuation of pink bollworm, Pectinophora gossypiella for two years (1981 and 1982). The results indicated that pink bollworm moths remained active throughout the year, with minimum intensity during the hot months (May–July) of summer. The maximum moth population was recorded in the month of October, in both the years. The moth emergence in March/April proved to be suicidal as there was no infestible fruiting bodies of preferred host in the field. The pink bollworm population was recorded even during the winter months which indicated that the pest probably does not enter into true diapause. These studies may prove helpful in planning an effective control strategy against pink bollworm.
The efficacy of gossyplure (1:1 mixture of Cis, Cis and Cis, trans isomers of 7,11‐hexadecadienyl acetate) in controlling pink bollworm infestation through male annihilation technique and mating disruption technique was compared with insecticidal spray (Sumicidin 20% EC). The results indicated that mating disruption technique was comparable with insecticidal spray treatment. Male annihilation technique was found to be less effective in controlling pink bollworm infestation when compared either with mating disruption technique or insecticidal spray treatment.
