A density-functional theory, based on the smoothed density approximation, is presented in order to study phase transitions in systems of hard spherocylinders with full translational and orientational degrees of freedom. We find both the nematic-isotropic and the nematic-smectic-zl phase transition in a wide range of length-to-width ratios L/D. The predictions of our theory are in good agreement with results of computer simulations and we recover Onsager's limit of L/D-*-«>. We also make some comments about application of the theory to systems of hard ellipsoids.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
