El tapir amazónico (Tapirus terrestris), es un herbívoro nativo de gran tamaño e importancia alimenticia. Los esfuerzos por su preservación y estudio son importantes como se recordó en el marco del II Congreso Ecuatoriano de Mastozoología y I Congreso Latinoamericano de Tapires, que reconoció los esfuerzos de trabajo desarrollados en la amazonia ecuatoriana. Se presenta el resultado de la caracterización químico-nutritiva de sietes especies vegetales consumidas por T. terrestris, a través de análisis proximal (humedad, grasa, fibra cruda, ceniza, proteína total) utilizando técnicas convencionales. Se realizó el análisis de proteína verdadera y digerible, identificación de azúcares, cuantificación de aminoácidos libres y acidez titulable. También se determinaron minerales usando técnicas de absorción atómica y vitaminas hidrosolubles por Cromatografía líquida de alta presión (HPLC). Se encontraron cantidades apreciables de aminoácidos esenciales; gran variedad de minerales en cantidades diversas; vitamina C, trazas de B2 (Riboflavina) y PP (Nicotinamida). En base a los resultados obtenidos se recomienda el cultivo y manejo de estas especies vegetales como fuente de alimentación animal, considerando que en la amazonia todavía se debe conocer y reconocer la diversidad de fuentes alimenticias que nutren el conocimiento de la ciencia y su relación con las comunidades.
