The crystals of the title compound are monoclinic, space group P21/n. There are four molecules in the unit cell of dimensions a = 11-646, b = 22.831, c = 9.172 A, fl = 90-6 °. The structure has been determined from diffractometer data by Patterson and Fourier methods and refined by block-diagonal least-squares calculations to R = 5.7 % for 4707 independent reflexions. The main features in this compound are the presence of two non-equivalent copper atoms, both pentacoordinated, and the octadentate behaviour of the organic ligand which is present in its deprotonated form. The whole structure consists of a tetrameric system of copper atoms connected by two ligand molecules. Infrared and electronic spectra are also discussed.

The structure of the title compound was solved from diffractometer data by Patterson and Fourier methods and refined by least-squares techniques to R 5.0% for 2967 observed reflections. Crystals are triclinic, space group PT, with unit-cell dimensions: a = 8.354( 8), b = 8.304(7), c = 11.115(8) 8, c( = 108.2(1), p = 100-3(1), y = 102.3(1)", Z = 2. The co-ordination around mercury involves the diphenyl sulphoxide molecule via the oxygen atom at 2-58 8, two close chlorine atoms at 2.291 and 2.289 8, and two chlorine atoms of neighbouring molecules a t 3.230 and 3.284 8. A sixth position is occupied by a phenyl ring a t 3,51 8.
