An 8‐week feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effect of supplemental dietary zinc sources on the growth performance and carbohydrate utilization of juvenile tilapia Smith 1840, Oreochromis niloticus × O. aureus. The goal was to compare the bioavailability of two zinc sources, zinc sulphate (ZnSO4) or zinc methionine (ZnMet), by using two practical basal diets with 350 g kg−1 (C350) or 400 g kg−1 (C400) carbohydrates based on wheat as the carbohydrate source. The results showed that fish fed with a diet supplemented with 60 mg kg−1 Zn from either ZnSO4 or ZnMet had a significantly (P < 0.05) greater specific growth rate and protein efficiency ratio than those fed with the diets of ≤30 mg kg−1 Zn. The composition of tilapia carcass was also found to be influenced by various levels of dietary zinc from the two zinc sources. The G6P‐DH in fish fed with the 20 mg kg−1 ZnMet diet and the PK levels in fish fed with 20 mg kg−1 ZnSO4 and 30 mg kg−1 ZnMet diet were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than those in fish fed with the C400 diet. The data suggest that supplemental dietary zinc from either ZnMet or ZnSO4 significantly affects the growth performance and carbohydrate utilization of tilapia.
The effects of supplemental l‐ascorbyl‐2‐polyphosphate (APP) in enriched live food (Artemia) on reactive oxygen intermediate (ROI) and free radical scavenging enzyme (superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase and glutathione transferase) activities in the muscle of Penaeus vannamei of two sizes exposed to ambient ammonia‐N, were investigated. Significantly, decreased ROI value was found in prawns fed on enriched Artemia compared with those fed on starved Artemia (P < 0.05); the decrease was 24% and 36%, respectively. In both size classes, the antioxidant enzyme activities in prawns fed on enriched Artemia were higher than in those fed on starved Artemia (P < 0.05). The results demonstrated that the supplementation of ascorbic acid in enriched live food (Artemia) enhanced the antioxidant capacity of prawn, increasing its defense system that may fight against environmental stress, leading to impaired ammonia toxicity.
b-1,3-Glucan with 1.0 g kg )1 was supplemented to a basal diet [control (C)] with different feeding schedules: permanently b-1,3-glucan diet (BG) and 14 days BG-14 days control diet (C + BG). Growth and immunological responses [respiratory burst (RB), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), lysozyme and total protein] in haemolymph, hepatopancreas and muscle of Litopenaeus vannamei were recorded after 84-day feeding and exposure to nitrite-N (20 mg L )1 ) for 120 h. b-1,3-Glucan administration did not affect growth performance. However, as compared with control, elevated CAT and lysozyme activities were seen in haemolymph of both BG groups, while significantly higher activities of SOD, lysozyme and RB in hepatopancreas, and higher activities of CAT and lysozyme in muscle were only seen in C + BG group. After nitrite-N stress, significantly higher haemolymph protein, and hepatopancreas activities of lysozyme and RB were observed in both BG groups, but significantly higher activities of haemolymph SOD was only seen in C + BG group. The mortality in groups BG and C + BG was significantly lower than that in group C, but C + BG group showed a trend of higher nitrite-N resistance compared with BG group. Considering dietary cost and immunostimulatory effects, the feeding schedule with 14 days BG-14 days control diet is more recommended.
Summary
Length–weight relationships (LWRs) were estimated for 15 species belonging to four orders and five families from the Xunjiang River, China. Exponent b varied from 2.364 to 3.634, and r2 values varied from .914 to .991. This is the first LWR report in the area for these species, seven species of which are published for the first time.
The objective of this study was to examine the association between brain iron measurements of monoamine function and behavioural measurements of learning and memory. Male hybrid tilapias Oreochromis aureus × Oreochromis niloticus were fed either an iron-deficient (ID) diet or an iron-adequate (IA) diet for 8 weeks. The ID fishes showed significantly lower iron content in brain and decreasing learning and memory capacity. The fishes that showed increased learning and memory capacity had higher levels of iron and monoamine oxidase activity in brain. In addition, the results showed that learning and memory behaviours were related to monoamine (dopamine and noradrenaline) concentration in the brain. This suggests that iron can enhance learning and memory capacity in fishes and that the effect may have monoaminergic mediation in discrimination learning and memory tasks. The experimental data suggest that the properties and neural basis of learning and memory of teleosts are notably similar to those of land vertebrates.
