Batıda yeniçağla birlikte toplum bilimcileri nüfusun niteliği üzerinde araştırma ve incelemede bulunmuşlar, hemen hemen her ülkede bunun için nüfus sayımları bilimsel bir biçimde yapılmaya başlanmıştı. Sayım sonuçları üzerine değerlendirmeler yapılarak sorunlara çözümler aranmıştır. Osmanlı Devleti’nde kuruluştan hemen sonra «Memleket Tahriri» adı altında öncelikle fethedilen topraklar üzerindeki halkın gelirlerini ve ellerinde bulundurdukları araziyi saptamak için sayımlar ve yazımlar yapılmıştır. Nüfusla ilgili bilgilerin en önemli kaynağı olan tahrir defterlerinin amaçları ve tutulma usullerine bakarak, günümüz benzeri nüfus hizmetlerinin aynısını buralarda görmeye imkân yoktur.Osmanlı devletinde 1831 (Hicri 1251) yılında Rumeli ve Anadolu vilayetlerinde modern anlamda yapılan ilk nüfus sayımı olarak değerlendirilmektedir. Bu nüfus sayımı üç-beş yılda tamamlanabilmiştir. Çıldır eyaletine bağlı olan Ardanuç sancağına ait nüfus sayımı Hicri 1251 tarihinde yapılmıştır. 1 Muharrem 1251 Hicri tarihi Miladi olarak 29 Nisan 1835 tarihine denk gelmektedir. Bu sayımda Ardanuç merkez ve köylerinin Müslüman ve Gayrimüslim nüfus sayımları yapılmıştır.İncelenen 1835 tarihli Ardanuç nüfus defterinde, Ardanuç sancağına bağlı merkez Ardanuç Kal’ası olmak üzere 48yerleşim yerinin erkek nüfusuna yer verilmiştir. Bu köylerde nüfus sayımı yapılırken sayımın genel amaçları olan askere alma ve vergilendirme esasına uygun olarak Müslüman, Ermeni ve Kıptiler ayrı defterlere yazılmıştır. Bu çalışmada nüfus sayımında yer alan verilerden hareketle defterlerde başta hane reisi olmak üzere hanede çalışan veya çalışabilir durumdaki nüfusun mesleği, vergilendirme durumu ve yaşı gibi bazı verilerden yola çıkarak değerlendirmeler yapılmıştır.
