Residents view their nursing home as the place for dying in a much more positive light compared to frequent discussions contrasting population surveys and actual places of death. End of life prearrangements should be designed as a dynamic process that include persons of trust, nurses and general practitioners.

In the study, the causes of mortality at emergency unit of chest diseases branch hospital were evaluated. Material and Method: The mortality ratio and causes of the patients those had been admitted and died in emergency unit of chest diseases and thoracic surgery between January 2007 -December 2008 were evaluated. Results: 192 patients those had died in emergency unit were included. In all emergency admissions, the mortality was 0.38% (192/49.832). 80.2% were men and average age was 64.2±12.5 (20-105) years. The higher mortality was in group of 60-79 years old. Most frequent causes of mortality were COPD (n=81, 42.2%), lung cancer (n=73, 38.0%) and pneumonia (n=16, 8.3%). Following ones were congestive heart disease (n=12, 6.3%) and myocardial infarction (n=8, 4.2%). Of 73 lung cancer patients, 61 had advanced stage disease. Conclusion: The primary causes of mortality at chest diseases and thoracic surgery emergency unit were chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, advanced stage malignancies (primary lung cancer and other organ malignities metastatic to lungs) and pneumonia.
