Abstract-This article presents the utilization of problem-based (PBL) learning to develop soft and hard skills among university students. The problem that faced the students was the inefficient way of dealing with waste in the High school Luis Enrique Morales Alfaro of Guayaquil, Ecuador. Students and teachers applied (PBL) to solve the problem. The results show significant increments in the soft skills of communication and teamwork of the students. Resumen-Este artículo presenta la utilización de aprendizaje basado en problemas (ABP) para que estudiantes universitarios desarrollen sus competencias tanto genéricas como específicas. El problema que enfrentaron los estudiantes fue el de prácticas inadecuadas de manejo de desechos sólidos en el colegio Luis Enrique Morales Alfaro de Guayaquil, Ecuador. Los estudiantes universitarios junto con sus maestros aplicaron la técnica de ABP para solucionar el problema. Los resultados muestran que los estudiantes incrementaron sus competencias de trabajo en equipo y comunicación.
