Uplifting of rotating parts is sometimes observed on units with adjustable-blade turbines in transitional regimes. This can occur not only on dumping the load but also in normal operating regimes, e.g., upon fast closing of the guide vanes without disconnecting the hydroelectric generator from the power line.As the investigations performed by the V. V. Kuibyshev Moscow Civil Engineering Institute showed, uplifting of the rotating parts of the unit occurs in the case of a certain combination of the rotor speed, opening of the guide vanes, and runner-blade angle, when the turbine runner is operating in a pump regime.
From the Editorial Office. In connection with the major importance of questions raised in the paper concerning the increased operating efficiency of hydroelectric plants, the editorial staff invites those who read the journal to express their own opinion regarding problems associated with the improvement of repair production at hydroelectrio plants. At the start of 1979, the Ministry of Power and Electrification of the USSR had in operation 385 hydroelectric power plants, of which 194 represent 71 independent establishments -hydroelectric plants and networks of plants. The other 191 plants come under line and other establishments of the power systems, or are united with thermal electric ~lants. In the overwhelmingmajority, the capacity of these plants does not exceed 1.5-2 MW.The rated capacity of the hydroelectric plants on Jan. i, 1979, amounted to 17.2 million kW, or 18% of the total capacity of all hydroelectric plants overseen by the Ministry of Power and Electrification of the USSR. The generation of electric power at these plants reached 168.8 billion kWh in 1978. The bulk of the nation's water power comes from 118 moderate and large hydroelectric plants with capacities of more than 25 MW, which comes to 98% of the entire rated capacity of the hydroelectric plants. Included among them are 12 hydroelectric plants with capacities of more than 1 million kW, eight plants with a capacity of more than 600,000 kW, and 42 plants with a capacity in excess of i00,000 kW.At the outset of 1979, 15,400 persons belonging to the industrial-production staff, including ~ 930 persons from the permanent staff, were engaged in the operation and repair of equipment at hydroelectric plants in the independent balance. The specific manpower of the hydroelectric plants amounted to 0.327 man/MW.
