Die gegenseitige Flockung zwischen Polygalakturonsäure als polymerer Säure und Polyäthylenimin als polymerer Base wird unter verschiedenen Reaktionsbedingungen untersucht. Die Flockung kommt vor allem durch elektrostatische Anziehung zwischen den entgegengesetzt geladenen Polyionen zustande. Je höher die Ladungsdichte des Polygalakturonatanions ist, desto mehr Polykation ist meist für eine Koagulation notwendig. Die Polykationen des Polyäthylenimins haben eine grössere Affinität für das polymere als für das monomere Galakturonatanion.

Dabei zeigen die Polygalakturonsauren mit steigendem Amidierungsgrad eine abnehmende Ikislichkeit in Wasser und ergeben Losungen geringer Viskositat, die leicht durch Elektrolyte koaguliert werden konnenz). Diese Eigenschaften wurden auf die Fahigkeit der Amidgruppen zuriickgefiihrt, inter-und intramolekulaxe Wasserstoffbrucken zu bilden. Doch konnten sie teilweise auch auf einem Abbau der Fadenmolekeln wahrend der Umsetzung beruhen, da glykosidische Bindungen der Polygalakturonsaure moglicher.~eise alkalilabil sind, wenn die Carboxylgruppen verestert sind3).
