Termos para indexação: fosfito, varíola, Asperisporium caricae, controle, mamoeiro EVALUATION OF PHOSPHITE APPLICATIONS FOR SEVERITY OF PAPAYA BLACK SPOT (ASPERISPORIUM CARICAE)ABSTRACT -The control of black spot of papaya is necessary, therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of foliar applications of phosphites (K, Ca, Mg and Cu) on papaya black spot. Two phosphites and the fungicide Fosetyl-Al were tested on a field trial with papaya plants naturally infected by the pathogen. Ten phosphites and the fungicide Fosetyl-Al were tested in a greenhouse trial, also with plants naturally infected by A. caricae. In both, field and greenhouse trials, the phosphite treatments reduced black spot severity.
It has been demonstrated that for a nonpathogenic, leaf-associated bacterium, effectiveness in the control of bacterial speck of tomato is correlated with the similarity in the nutritional needs of the nonpathogenic bacterium and the pathogen Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato. This relationship was investigated further in this study by using the pathogen Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria, the causal agent of bacterial spot of tomato, and a collection of nonpathogenic bacteria isolated from tomato foliage. The effects of inoculation of tomato plants with one of 34 nonpathogenic bacteria prior to inoculation with the pathogen X. campestris pv. vesicatoria were quantified by determining (i) the reduction in disease severity (number of lesions per square centimeter) in greenhouse assays and (ii) the reduction in leaf surface pathogen population size (log 10 of the number of CFU per leaflet) in growth chamber assays. Nutritional similarity between the nonpathogenic bacteria and X. campestris pv. vesicatoria was quantified by using either niche overlap indices (NOI) or relatedness in cluster analyses based upon in vitro utilization of carbon or nitrogen sources reported to be present in tomato tissues or in Biolog GN plates. In contrast to studies with P. syringae pv. tomato, nutritional similarity between the nonpathogenic bacteria and the pathogen X. campestris pv. vesicatoria was not correlated with reductions in disease severity. Nutritional similarity was also not correlated with reductions in pathogen population size. Further, the percentage of reduction in leaf surface pathogen population size was not correlated with the percentage of reduction in disease severity, suggesting that the epiphytic population size of X. campestris pv. vesicatoria is not related to disease severity and that X. campestris pv. vesicatoria exhibits behavior in the phyllosphere prior to lesion formation that is different from that of P. syringae pv. tomato.
Brazil is the world's largest producer of passion fruit, a perishable fruit with reduced post-harvest shelf life, which limits its commercialization. For sweet passion fruit, Passiflora alata, there is little information about its postharvest conservation and shelf life under different storage conditions. Thus, the objective of the present study was to determine the post-harvest conservation of P. alata fruits packed on styrofoam trays rapped with 10 μm PVC film and HDPE 30 μm thick, coated with 18% carnauba wax and without any packaging; stored under ambient conditions (25 °C and 70% relative humidity) and refrigerated (10 °C and 90% relative humidity) for 14 days. The best results were obtained with P. alata fruits packaged on styrofoam trays rapped with 10 μm PVC flexible film and kept under refrigeration in a cold room at a temperature of 10 °C and relative humidity between 85% and 90% for a period of 10 to 14 days. Fruits of P. alata, for commercialization "in natura", kept under ambient conditions, should not be packaged and have a shelf life of up to seven days.
Papaya (Carica papaya) foot rot (Phytophthora palmivora) reduction due to phosphitesThis study showed that two weekly sprays of phosphite [A (40 % P 2 O 5 + 20 % K 2 O, 150 mL commercial product. hL -1 ), B (40 % P 2 O 5 + 20 % K 2 O, 250 mL), C (10 % P 2 O 5 + 6 % Ca, 400 mL), D (20 % P 2 O 5 + 20 % K 2 O, 200 mL), E (40 % P 2 O 5 + 6 % Mg, 150 mL), F (30 % P 2 O 5 + 20 % K 2 O, 175 mL), G (20 % P 2 O 5 + 20 % K 2 O, 200 mL) ] for three consecutive weeks before pathogen inoculation reduced disease severity.
