This study explores the possible development pathways for the Dutch dairy sector as we approach 2030. An economic model was developed with which the effect of economic, policy, and societal changes on the structure of the Dutch dairy farm sector can be explored. The baseline scenario is based on existing and implemented policy and continuation of past behaviour. In 2030, this will result in a 33% decrease in the number of farms and a 4% increase in the total milk production (compared to 2018), and a decrease in the number of cows to nearly 1.5 million. In addition to the baseline scenario, three exploratory scenarios based on potential future societal changes were investigated.Recommendations are made about how the insights may be used to make dairy farming more economically sound and more sustainable. Het doel van dit onderzoek is om inzicht te geven in de meerkosten voor melkvee-en akkerbouwbedrijven van biodiversiteitsmaatregelen op basis van een integraal betere score op indicatoren uit de biodiversiteitsmonitor. De kosten voor intensieve melkveebedrijven, extensieve melkveebedrijven en bedrijven op veen zijn respectievelijk € 1,95, € 2,18 en € 3,08 per honderd kg melk. Gewogen over deze drie bedrijfstypen in de melkveehouderij zijn de meerkosten € 2,21 per honderd kg melk ofwel € 417 per hectare. De geraamde meerkosten voor akkerbouwbedrijven op klei met een bouwplan met consumptieaardappelen en voor akkerbouwbedrijven op zand met een bouwplan met zetmeelaardappelen zijn respectievelijk € 324 en € 185 per hectare. Voor zowel de melkveehouderij als de akkerbouw is een breed pakket aan maatregelen nodig om tot een betere score te komen. The aim of this study is to provide insight into the additional costs of biodiversity measures for dairy farms and arable farms on the basis of an integral better score on indicators from the biodiversity monitor. The costs for intensive dairy farms, extensive dairy farms and farms on peat are € 1.95, € 2.18 and € 3.08 per 100 kg of milk respectively. Weighted over the three types of farms in the dairy farming sector, the additional costs are € 2.21 per 100 kg of milk and € 417 per hectare. The estimated additional costs for arable farms on clay with a cultivation plan with potatoes for consumption or on sand with a cultivation plan with potatoes for starch are 324 and 185 per hectare respectively. Both dairy farming and arable farming require a wide range of measures to achieve a better score. Samen met Nederlandse partners uit het bedrijfsleven zijn mogelijkheden verkend om tot een IraansNederlandse samenwerking te komen om de Iraanse zuivelsector te versterken. Iran is een land met een zuiveltraditie en binnen de centraal geleide economie is de ambitie om de productie verder te laten groeien en zuivel te exporteren. Een groot deel van de productie vindt op professionele melkveebedrijven plaats. Vier centrale thema's zijn geïdentificeerd voor een potentiële samenwerking: melkkwaliteit, beschikbaarheid en kwaliteit van voer, waterefficiëntie en voerproductie, en educatie.Aan Nederlandse en aan Iraanse kant zijn potentiële partners voor deze samenwerking benoemd.In cooperation with Dutch industrial partners, possibilities for a Dutch-Iranian cooperation have been explored aiming at a strengthening of the Iranian dairy sector. Iran is a country with a dairy tradition.The ambition of Iran, within its centrally planned economy, is to further develop dairy production and look for possibilities to export. A large share of the volume is produced on professional dairy farms.Four key topics have been defined for a possible cooperation: milk quality, feed availability and quality, water efficiency and feed production and education. Both on the Dutch and the Iranian side possible partners for this cooperation have been identified.
