According to our preliminary results, prostaglandin antiglaucomatous analogs do not significantly enhance pigmentation in the superficial layers of the conjunctiva. The existence of the Tyrosinase enzyme in the superficial layers of the conjunctiva suggests that basal melanocytes may transfer their melanogenic apparatus to superficial epithelial cells.
The values obtained by the O.B.F. Langham's System at the end of the treatment were substantially the same as those at the beginning, with an improvement trend in 37.5'%, of the eyes, an outset mean value of 589.91 pl/min becoming 649.66 pl/min with p=0.005.
ConclusionsAs can be seen from the summary table, nicergoline is shown to have an effective action on neuronal energy metabolism and neurotransmission. Its action on retinal circulation is statistically significant, too, while, though it shows a trend to improve ophthalmic artery and choroidal plexus circulation, the pre-and posttreatment readings are not statistically significant. Nicergoline has platelet antiaggregating and erythrocyte deforming actions, which fact perhaps explains flow parameter improvement, in the small vessels, significant, in the larger vessels, present but not significant. Our conclusion, therefore, is that nicergohe, because of its neurotrophic, vasoactive and haemorrheologic actions, and thanks to its good tolerability, can take its place in the therapy of some optic neuropathies and, in particular, that of glaucoma, in view of what has recently been found regarding glaucomatous damage pathogenesis.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
