Abstract

SUMMARY: The article by Alexander Dmitriev is focused on the imperial institutions of education and academic science. They are approached as factors of the emergence and shaping of national science in Ukraine in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, through 1917. Institutions such as the universities in Kiev, Khar’kov and Odessa, historical-philological institute in Nezhin, Kiev spiritual academy, and local archival commissions contributed to the development of regional studies in the framework of imperial intellectual strategies of description and appropriation of space and time (that also involved the interpretation of the past and future horizons). Yet, in the same framework there developed scientific aspirations and processes of liberal-positivist type that aided directly or indirectly the emergence of the national paradigm of organization of scientific knowledge. The article also addresses the Galician factor that fostered the formation of the Ukrainian national science. This influence was encapsulated in the activities of the Shevchenko Scientific Society, chairs in Ukrainian language in the universities of Lviv and Chernivtsi. The main basis for the development of the national paradigm was the Shevchenko Scientific Society (after 1892) and Ukrainian Scientific Society (after 1907), the activities of the leader of these institutions, Mykhailo Hrushevsky and his like-minded fellows.
