δ13C and δ15N Variability in Modern Guanaco (Lama guanicoe) Assemblages in Southern Patagonia: Implications for Zooarchaeological Studies

Abstract: We study the isotopic variability of modern social groups of guanacos (Lama guanicoe) and discuss the implications of these results for the analysis of archaeofaunas from archaeological sites of Patagonia. The aim of this work is to evaluate whether the study of the isotope composition of carbon and nitrogen from collagen (δ13C and δ15N) is a methodology that allows the discussion of hunting strategies – individual versus mass – carried out by human populations in this particular case of the guanaco from south… Show more

“…In the same sense, in the terrestrial environment, the guanacos analysed here register higher values in the δ 15 N if we compare them with those studied in the inland of the province at similar latitude distant about 400 km from the NCSC, with a mean of 6.1‰ in the δ 15 N. The differences are statistically significant ( p ≤ .05; Tessone, ; Tessone, Rindel, Belardi, Panarello, & Goñi, ). A possible cause of the difference would be the influence of the marine spray on the terrestrial trophic chains.…”

“…Guanaco collected in the Nahuel Huapi NP (Limay area) had δ 13 C −20.5‰ and δ 15 N 5.9‰, and those from Tecka showed a δ 13 C −19.1‰, and a δ 15 N 5.0‰ (Table ). These results are similar to the sample of 70 guanacos from the centre‐west of Santa Cruz (Tessone, ; Tessone et al ., ). All together, these samples have a mean δ 13 C of −19.4‰ ± 0.9‰ and δ 15 N of 6.2‰ ± 1.4‰ (Table ), with a non‐outlier range between −21.2‰/−18.0‰ and 3.8‰/8.0‰, respectively.…”
