γδ T cells in cancer

Abstract: With the promise of T cell-based therapy for cancer finally becoming reality, this Review focuses on the less-studied γδ T cell lineage and its diverse responses to tumours. γδ T cells have well-established protective roles in cancer, largely on the basis of their potent cytotoxicity and interferon-γ production. Besides this, recent studies have revealed a series of tumour-promoting functions that are linked to interleukin-17-producing γδ T cells. Here, we integrate the current knowledge from both human and mo… Show more

“…Thus, the mechanisms downstream IL-17 produced by gd T cells in the Ret melanoma model are consistent with those reviewed in ref. 2 . Indeed, gd17 cells promote directly, or via cancer cell stimulation, the recruitment, expansion, differentiation and survival of PMN-MDSCs both in mouse models of hepatocellular carcinoma 18 and breast cancer, 17 and in human colorectal cancer.…”

“…Classical T cells (alpha-beta), unlike gamma-delta T cells (Silva-Santos et al, 2015) and B cells, cannot detect soluble antigen. Instead, they recognize antigen in the form of peptides bound to MHC molecules.…”

“…Other types of T cells that have been investigated for immunotherapy are natural killer T (NKT) cells and gamma delta T cells (γδ Tc) (Fujii et al, 2013;Silva-Santos et al, 2015). NKT cells are a heterogeneous group of T cells that have properties of both natural killer (NK) cells and T cells; they recognize CD1d molecule and constitute only approximately 0.1% of all peripheral blood T cells.…”
